Bobby Watson Quartet

BOBBY WATSON QUARTET

Bobby Watson is an artist that sits among the pantheon of present-day jazz greats. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, his career now spans more than four decades. A multi-grammy-nominated saxophonist, Watson trained formally at the University of Miami and then, from 1977-1981, earned his “doctorate” as musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He then went on to work with jazz icons such as Max Roach, Louis Hayes, George Coleman and Sam Rivers and legendary vocalists such as Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, and Betty Carter. In the mid-80’s he formed the preeminent Horizon band, which recorded several highly acclaimed titles for the Blue Note and Columbia labels. All told, the saxophonist has issued well over 40 recordings under his own name, while appearing on well over 100 other titles and has recorded more than 100 original compositions. Watson’s latest album, Back Home in Kansas City, draws inspiration from the rich jazz heritage of his Kansas City hometown where he has lived for the last two decades.
