Join us for a public artist reception for iconic Bay Area photographer David Johnson on May 25!
The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) Galleries is pleased to present David Johnson: In the Zone (1945-1965), an exhibition at San Francisco City Hall featuring 65 photographic works on loan from UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library, which houses Johnson’s vast archive of over 5000 photographic prints and negatives.
When a perfect image revealed itself, David Johnson was “in the zone.” View his iconic photographs of the Civic Rights Movement, life in the Fillmore and Bayview neighborhoods, jazz clubs, dance halls, celebrities, and community leaders – all produced during a pivotal time in American history that frames today’s reckoning with the legacies of injustice and oppression.
