Juneteenth Gala: Freedom Carriers – Women Who Build, Lead, and Liberate
June 19 @ 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM PDT

This year’s Juneteenth celebration is inspired by the indomitable spirit of Opal Lee, affectionately known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Ms. Lee campaigned for decades to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. She symbolically walked 2.5 miles each year, representing the 2.5 years it took enslaved people in Texas to learn they were free following the Emancipation Proclamation. At age 89, she walked from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., arriving in January 2017 to amplify her message. Her unwavering dedication helped ensure that Juneteenth was finally recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
