SUMMARY:The Joffrey Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Straying far from Shakespeare’s familiar path\, the peerless Joffrey Ballet returns to Berkeley with Alexander Ekman’s daring and exuberant Midsummer Night’s Dream\, a mind-bending trip to a surreal realm of unearthly delights. This “odd\, wonderful\, provocative and utterly original work” (Chicago Sun Times) begins during the traditional Scandinavian summer solstice festival—the dancers celebrating a day of revelry and romance under the maypole—but soon blossoms into a sensual\, otherworldly fantasy. Featuring Swedish indie rock sensation Anna von Hausswolff and performed to a score by composer Mikael Karlsson\, Midsummer is a bold fusion of classical and contemporary ballet that artfully blurs the line between the real and the imagined\, and makes us wonder\, is it all a dream? \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Days and Nights in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Four young men leave Calcutta for a few days in the country\, trailing their westernized careerist attitudes\, a middle-class indifference to the lower orders\, and a self-satisfaction that leaves them closed to experience. Out of a series of delightfully funny mishaps as they eagerly try to pursue acquaintance with their two promisingly attractive neighbors\, Satyajit Ray gradually distills a magical world of absolute stasis: a shimmering summer’s day\, a tranquil forest clearing\, the two women strolling in a shady avenue\, wistful yearnings as love and the need for love echo plangently. Beautifully shot and acted\, it’s probably Ray’s masterpiece. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Kouté vwa
DESCRIPTION:A family’s long-carried grief forms the heart of this highly personal blend of fiction and documentary\, set in French Guiana. Teenage Melrick spends his seemingly carefree summers with his grandmother in the capitol\, Cayenne\, but his desire to learn drumming opens up his family’s memories of another boy who once drummed\, before his life was taken away. Part coming-of-age story\, part reflection on the endemic and senseless violence that still haunts the Caribbean\, the film also offers\, “on a deeper layer\, a story about grief and forgiveness that also deals with the persisting consequences of colonialism: a violence that equally cannot pass” (CineEuropa). \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Gallery+Studio / Go Figure!
DESCRIPTION:This two-part workshop integrates an interactive gallery tour with a related art project. Sign up in the Art Lab ten minutes ahead of the session\, which begins with a short gallery tour at 11:30 AM. \nSome artworks ask us to question our immediate recognition of what we see. Are we looking at a shape made from metal or a stand-in for our own body? Inspired by the three-dimensional metal forms in Zaroulie Abdaliam’s sculpture Close of Winter\, use basic materials (including extra-large pipe cleaners) to explore height\, width\, and depth as you build a vertical sculpture of an abstract body\, embellished with curlicues\, zigzags\, and circles for extra personality. \nInfo & Tickets
