SUMMARY:Bat Week Screening of ‘The Invisible Mammal’
DESCRIPTION:The Citizens Environmental Council invites you to a free screening of an award-winning documentary highlighting the fight to save North American bats on Wednesday\, October 21\, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burlingame Community Center at 850 Burlingame Ave. in Burlingame. There is no charge for admission\, but pre-registration is required. \nJust in time for Halloween – and Bat Week! – “The Invisible Mammal” focuses on the plight of several species of North American bats now at risk because of a deadly fungal disease called White-nose Syndrome (WNS) and a team of women biologists determined to rescue these rapidly vanishing species. After a screening of the 90-minute film\, filmmaker Kristin Tièche will offer insights and answer questions about a strategy called Operation Fat Bat\, pioneered by women scientists\, that could rebuild healthy bat populations across North America. \nBats save U.S. agriculture billions of dollars in pesticide use each year\, and the decline of bat populations is linked to an increase in infant mortality where these pesticides are used. Since 2006\, WNS has decimated bat populations across 42 states and Canada\, killing millions of bats. \nFor more information\, visit cecburlingame.org or email info@cecburlingame.org. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Handel’s The Power of Music
DESCRIPTION:Fresh off his 2025 London Proms success with the Irish Baroque Orchestra\, Music Director Peter Whelan opens the 2026/27 subscription season with Handel’s Alexander’s Feast. Centered on a banquet honoring Alexander the Great\, the poet Timotheus uses song to guide the room from pride to tenderness\, from fury to reflection — a demonstration of music’s power to shape emotion and action. \nConcert Highlights\n\nThe concert features the 1742 Dublin version\, performed in Ireland just weeks before the world premiere of Messiah.\nThe work serves as a major showcase for the soloists and Philharmonia Chorale\, with arias\, ensembles\, and choruses that move the drama forward.\nHandel contrasts ceremonial brilliance with intimate reflection\, including music for trumpet and drums alongside lyrical writing for voices and strings.\nPhilharmonia performs on period instruments\, so you can hear the music much as audiences did in Handel’s time.\n\nPerformancesNovember 11 — Bing Concert Hall\, StanfordNovember 13 — Herbst Theatre\, San FranciscoNovember 14 — First Congregational Church of Berkeley\, Berkeley \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Hélène Grimaud Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:Hélène Grimaud\, the singular pianist and Renaissance woman\, opens this recital with two Rachmaninoff picture pieces\, and then launches into the final piano sonatas of Beethoven and Schubert. Beethoven’s Op. 111 plays wildly against classical conventions\, unfolding in just two movements and ending with an epic set of variations\, which some say prophesied jazz and funk. \nSchubert’s enveloping B-flat major sonata is one of the most sublime works in the piano literature\, the musical culmination of Schubert’s too-short life. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:The Surge: An Ode to Sinéad O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:Sonya Tayeh emerged from the underground Detroit dance scene to become a creative visionary in modern dance and theater. The Surge: An Ode to Sinéad O’Connor is her new evening-length dance piece set to O’Connor’s music. “The sound of [O’Connor’s] voice would pull into my ears and drive down my body\,” Tayeh says. \n“When she passed\, that feeling got louder.” The Surge casts ten women\, with 500 years of collective wisdom\, who explore the power of experience\, connecting spirituality and music in a physical response to O’Connor’s legacy. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
