SUMMARY:No Straight Lines
DESCRIPTION:From Tom of Finland to Dykes to Watch Out For\, comics and zines have been firmly embedded in queer culture since before Stonewall\, continuing through the AIDS epidemic and into today’s modern obsession with superheroes. This deeply queer artform finally gets its true moment in the limelight thanks to Vivian Kleiman’s extensive documentary exploring over seventy years of history. Featuring interviews with trailblazers like Alison Bechdel\, Howard Cruse\, Rupert Kinnard\, and Mary Wings\, No Straight Lines explores how the once underground world of queer comics grew to encompass the many mediums\, styles\, and inspirations that make this artform what it is today. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:State of Play presents: Dragons Dance/Erin Yen & Johnny Huy Nguyễn
DESCRIPTION:Nervous (World Premiere) is a new dance work by Dragons Dance/Erin Yen exploring human interconnectivity and the nervous system’s role in dissociation from the modern world. Created in collaboration with a practicing neurologist and the dancers\, Nervous asks\, ‘what happens when we turn up sensation and embody the world of our brains?’ \nHow do you burn? Reclaiming fire as a regenerative force for rebirth\, BURN (Work In Progress) envisions dance as a transformative act of self-immolation. How do we set ablaze inherited legacies of war\, forced displacement\, and violence passed down through family to create ash for new growth? \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:The Coltrane Influence: Two Different Expressions ft. Wayne Escoffery & Tal Cohen
DESCRIPTION:PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:Aug 27: 7:00 PM and 9:15 PMAug 28: 7:00 PM and 9:30 PMAug 29: 7:00 PM and 9:30 PMAug 30: 7:00 PM and 9:15 PM \nBlack Cat presents a rare convergence of two major voices in modern jazz\, each shaped by the towering legacy of John Coltrane yet speaking in distinct musical languages of their own. \nGrammy Award-winning saxophonist Wayne Escoffery brings a sound critics have called a “contemporary mix of Coltrane\, Shorter and Henderson influences\,” powerful\, passionate\, and unmistakably his own. A two-time Downbeat Critics Poll winner\, Escoffery has spent decades at the center of the jazz world: a member of Tom Harrell’s quintet for over a decade\, a musical director of the Mingus Big Band\, and leader of his own acclaimed quartet. His 2024 release Alone\, featuring Gerald Clayton\, Ron Carter\, and Carl Allen\, earned 5 stars in the London Times and was hailed as one of the year’s finest jazz statements. \nSharing the stage is Miami-based pianist Tal Cohen\, a Grammy-winning artist whose playing weaves folk melodies and classical influence into deeply personal\, modern jazz harmony. Winner of the Barry Harris National Piano Competition and the Freedman Fellowship\, Cohen has toured the globe alongside Terence Blanchard\, Joe Lovano\, and Greg Osby\, earning praise for the “passion\, focus and creativity” of his playing. \nTogether\, Escoffery and Cohen trace two divergent paths from a shared source\, a saxophonist whose sound channels Coltrane’s fire\, and a pianist whose harmonic palette reflects Coltrane’s restless search for new musical languages. \nBand Lineup: \nWayne Escoffery\, Tenor Saxophone \nTal Cohen\, Piano \nGiulio Xavier Cetto\, Bass \nMalachi Whitson\, Drums \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Purple Noon
DESCRIPTION:René Clément’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel is a dazzling sea blue film noir rehearsing an energetic sort of corruption based on pure cynicism. Alain Delon’s Tom Ripley is one of two young Americans on an extended European idyll. A cash offer to persuade his companion to return home kindles a fire under Tom’s lust for the other’s money and mistress; hidden talents emerge as he impersonates his (now dead) friend. As in Strangers on a Train\, another film about modern anonymity\, Highsmith’s sense of decadence is merely the erasure\, in plain day\, of any pretense to morality or identity. \nInfo & Tickets

DESCRIPTION:The world always needs love. However\, it feels like that’s the case today more than ever. It’s not out of reach though. That’s why Ledisi urges the return of love on her eighth full-length album\, Let Love Rule [Verve]. \n“I was thinking about the world\, our state\, and where we’re ruling from right now\,” she admits. “We’re ruling from the wrong place of money and power. SUMMARY:The Tale of The Princess Kaguya
DESCRIPTION:With impressionistic watercolor and charcoal animation\, this adaptation of a Japanese folktale begins with the titular Princess discovered in a stalk of bamboo. She rapidly ages\, cared for by her adoptive parents in the country\, an accelerated adolescence well suited to the strengths of animation and cinema. In fairytale fashion\, suitors line up to woo the Princess with material comforts\, but she has other ideas. Within this classic story structure\, Takahata’s dedication to representing the specificity and wonder of the everyday is ever present. Of his final movie\, Takahata said\, “This is a film that affirms the earth.” \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Elevator to the Gallows
DESCRIPTION:Louis Malle’s first feature is an elegant\, Hitchcockian thriller made when the director was just twenty-four. Maurice Ronet and Jeanne Moreau star as an ex-paratrooper and his lover\, who plot to murder her industrialist husband. Adroitly bringing in the wider issues of the Indochina War\, industry\, and runaway machinery\, Malle creates a milieu for his frantic\, frustrated lovers\, while an improvised score by Miles Davis becomes an abstraction of their punctuated existence. Moreau had been known more as a stage actress before making this film; her performance here—a startling mix of girlish charm\, steel\, and dangerous sensuality—vaulted her to cinematic stardom. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Eric Benet
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Milwaukee\, Eric Benet grew up surrounded by music as he so aptly describes it\, ‘on a cellular level.’ His siblings loved to sing and harmonize together\, and the family had subscriptions to all the industry music magazines\, so the seeds were being planted. He realized early in his life that this mathematical formula works: family+love= music. \nWhen he was in college\, he formed a music group with his sister and cousin called Benet. The group put a demo together and in 1991 they scored their first record deal with EMI. After the record didn’t generate a hit single and the label dropped them his sister decided to return to her job\, but Eric was in it for the long haul and was committed to persevere. Life was challenging at the time- he was a single father to daughter India after his partner was killed in a car accident and making ends meet by working at UPS. During that time\, he made a few more demos which found their way to Alison Ball at Warner Bros Records who had been with EMI. She knew a hit when she heard one and his second album\, True to Myself\, was released to great acclaim in 1996. He followed with A Day in the Life (1999) which generated his first #1 single with Tamia\, Spend My Life. His life changed dramatically after that time\, and he started touring internationally finding tremendous joy in hearing his music and lyrics sung by fans all over the world. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:State of Play presents: Malinda LaVelle and Emmaly Wiederholt
DESCRIPTION:What the Hell Happened in San Francisco? (Bay Area Premiere)(2024) is an evening-length work of dance-theater wrestling with idealism\, dreams\, and disillusionment. Malinda LaVelle and Emmaly Wiederholt met in 2008 in San Francisco while trying to “make it” as contemporary dance artists. They burned that dream bright and fast\, living and dancing together for several years before moving on to other schemes. Fast forward to 2021 and Malinda and Emmaly found themselves fortuitously living in the same city once again–this time Albuquerque. On a hot summer night relaxing in Emmaly’s backyard\, they reminisced about the experience of living in the Bay Area as young dance artists. Malinda sighed and said\, “What the hell happened in San Francisco? We should make a piece about it.” \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:State of Play presents: gizeh muñiz - Molino for Levitation
DESCRIPTION:This is a dynamic floor work technique class that invites dancers to move from their fluid body. It focuses on the somatic process of learning (or remembering) and embodying movement\, which allows us to not only train the body for aesthetic and performative purposes\, but for building neural pathways that can help us expand our awareness of space\, time\, and connection to the land. Through breath\, warmth\, stillness and movement\, this class explores a rigorous and buoyant physicality that embraces pleasure through phrases\, somatic practices and improvisation. \ngizeh is a movement\, teaching\, and performing artist currently co-existing in Ohlone territory. They are dedicated to the study of being a breathing body through movement and stillness. Through their work\, they create spaces that allow them to play and divest from concepts of linearity in a creative process\, with the intention of practicing freedom. gizeh’s choreographic and teaching work has been shared in the United States\, Mexico\, and Europe in festivals such as P.O.R.C.H in Germany\, Improspeckje in Croatia\, GUSH in San Francisco\, and 4×4 in Tijuana. gizeh has been an artist in residence at Atland Residency\, CounterPulse\, PUSH\, BANDALOOP\, and Bridge Live Arts\, and is the 2023-25 Radiate fellow of RAWdance. gizeh is the curator and producer of Gatherings – a free movement workshop series in the Bay Area. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Tongues Untied
DESCRIPTION:Tongues Untied is about the silence that envelops the lives of Black gay men. This exhilarating work is a loquacious attempt to break free of the homophobia and racism that mute the possibilities for human fulfillment. Marlon Riggs creates a poetic pastiche that has the emotional uplift of gospel music and the sobering impact of reportage. The words of gay poets\, personal testimony\, rap tableaux\, dramatic sequences\, and archival footage are woven together with a seductive palette of video effects. Riggs dares to speak the words that could conjure a life into being: “Black men loving Black men is the revolutionary act.” \nInfo & Tickets
