DESCRIPTION:Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame guitarist Elvin Bishop and Grammy-winning harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite are fellow blues travelers and living blues giants. The two history-making musicians—both Blues Hall Of Famers—have over 100 years of professional musicianship between them. They are among the most famous bluesmen in the world. Although they’ve known each other since the early 1960s\, this is the first time that they ever teamed up to make an album together. 100 Years Of Blues\, the new release on Alligator Records\, is blues at its deepest\, warmest and most engaging. \nNote: While Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite are white artists\, their music belongs undeniably to the realm of Black culture as a direct product of the African American blues tradition. Coming of age in 1960s Chicago\, both men were deeply immersed in the South and West Side music scenes\, where they were directly mentored by Black blues pioneers like Muddy Waters and Little Walter. To celebrate their work is to honor a profound lineage of cultural apprenticeship\, acknowledging that their sound is entirely rooted in the history\, resilience\, and creative genius of Black America. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances
DESCRIPTION:Conductor Karina Canellakis leads a trio of thrilling works that demonstrate the world-building power of the modern orchestra. Victoria Borisova-Ollas’s 2003 tone poem The Kingdom of Silence evokes a vibrant realm of mystery and magic. Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti brings her signature passion and precision to Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2\, a boldly cosmopolitan showpiece that boasts traditional Russian folk tunes as well as clickety-clackety castanets and other Spanish signifiers. Symphonic Dances\, the ailing Rachmaninoff’s spectacular swan song\, represents the composer’s late period at its opulent best. Rich in eccentric colors\, it conjures up entire galaxies of expression. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:A Closer Look: June Wayne\, Corita Kent\, and a New Age for Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:In the 1950s\, the newly established Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts became an important advocate of trailblazing American printmakers by acquiring and exhibiting their early work. Based in Los Angeles\, artists Sister Corita Kent (1918–1986) and June Wayne (1918–2011\, founder of Tamarind Lithography Workshop) helped catalyze a vibrant and experimental period of printmaking in the postwar era. They also trained a generation of contemporary printmakers. \nThis lecture takes a closer look at how the Achenbach Foundation supported these artists’ early careers\, illuminating the important role played by the department’s cofounder\, Hazel Jacobs Achenbach (1882–1962)\, and its first director\, Irene Lagorio (1921–1994). \nAbout the curator\nMargot Yale is assistant curator of prints and drawings at the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. She is responsible for the collection of 20th- and 21st-century works on paper. Yale has held positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Getty Research Institute\, and the Museum of Modern Art\, among others. A specialist in modern and contemporary American printmaking\, she received her PhD in art history from the University of Southern California and holds a BA in art history from Princeton University. \nAbout the “A Closer Look” series\nThis program is part of “A Closer Look\,” a curatorial lecture series exploring the development of the museums’ collections and their art historical significance. The series features in-depth presentations that highlight collection gems while demystifying creative practices spanning thousands of years. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
