SUMMARY:Laura Anglade
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based jazz chanteuse Laura Anglade is one of the most captivating storytellers in vocal jazz today\, an international touring artist whose conversational style forges an intimate connection with her audience even on some of the world’s great stages. \nOriginally from the village of Brousse-le-Château in the south of France\, Anglade grew up in the US and spent several years in Canada\, and her performances reflect those roots: rich in simplicity\, an appreciation for the past and a sense of wonder in ordinary moments. Her interpretations are shaped by legendary voices including Sarah Vaughan\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Shirley Horn\, Carmen McRae\, Michel Legrand and Barbra Streisand. Her 2022 release Venez Donc Chez Moi earned a Juno Award nomination\, and in 2023 she received the Prix Opus for Jazz Concert of the Year. She has headlined festivals across the US\, Canada\, Mexico\, the UK and Europe\, reaching renowned stages including Paris’s L’Olympia\, London’s Royal Festival Hall and New York’s Town Hall\, and returning regularly to the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. She has also toured in support of Melody Gardot and Gregory Porter. \nAnglade’s third album Get Out of Town arrived May 23\, 2025 to wide praise. She was featured on Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show Me Music” series performing the Rodgers & Hart standard “Manhattan\,” and has performed at Winter Jazzfest in New York. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Angela Davis in Conversation with Poulomi Saha
DESCRIPTION:Activist\, author\, educator\, and cultural icon Angela Davis reflects on more than 65 years of work across Black liberation\, feminism\, queer politics\, and prison abolition. From the international campaign for her freedom in the 1970s to her teaching\, organizing\, public speaking\, and 11 influential books\, Davis has remained a major voice in movements for racial and social justice. \nDavis takes Nina Simone’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” as a point of departure\, considering how the anthem’s vision of liberation can help people imagine freedom in the present. The event concludes with a conversation with Poulomi Saha\, UC Berkeley associate professor of English and chair of the Program in Critical Theory.

SUMMARY:California Current: Art and Histories from the Bay Area
DESCRIPTION:How does a community stay rooted in a region that’s constantly changing? California Current invites you to consider this question and others through its more than 60 works—many on view for the first time—that explore the interplay between Bay Area history\, art\, and artists over the past century. Titled after the major cold-water current that runs the length of the West Coast of North America\, California Current brings together paintings\, sculptures\, works on paper\, photographs\, and time-based media by Bay Area artists from the twentieth century to the present. \nThe exhibition traces a series of interconnected currents—ecological\, infrastructural\, technological\, personal\, creative\, and political—that have shaped both artistic production and everyday life in Northern California. Arranged thematically across time and media\, California Current places historical works in conversation with contemporary ones\, emphasizing both continuity and change. Together\, they ask: What has drawn so many people to this region? \nWhat has allowed communities and creative practices to take root here? And what continues to keep so many of us—despite the Bay Area’s contradictions\, pressures\, and constant reinvention—deeply connected to this place? Presented as part of the Further Triennial\, this exhibition features works by artists Pacita Abad\, Saif Azzuz (Libyan-Yurok)\, Robert Bechtle\, Bernice Bing\, Kota Ezawa\, L. Frank (Tongva\, Rarámuri)\, Lynn Hershman Leeson\, Mildred Howard\, Amalia Mesa-Bains\, Chiura Obata\, among others. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Elim Chan Conducts Adams and Mendelssohn
DESCRIPTION:Elim Chan conducts the Symphony in a stunning quartet of works that delve into the great unknown. In Nänie\, Brahms memorializes a beloved friend with a poignant choral funeral song\, transforming sorrowful resignation into humble gratitude. Renaud Capuçon regales us with the lustrous melodies\, vibrant textures\, and glittering pyrotechnics of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Arvo Pärt’s shimmering a cappella Magnificat exemplifies the tintinnabuli style\, which the composer invented and named after the bell-like resonance produced by a triad. John Adams’s Doctor Atomic Symphony\, a condensed instrumental version of his 2005 opera\, cloaks Nuclear Age anxiety in dark orchestral splendor. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Maryna Krut
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian singer and bandura player Maryna Krut brings the sound and story of her homeland to the Freight. The bandura—a many-stringed instrument with qualities of both lute and zither—anchors her music\, carrying traditional melodies into arrangements shaped by jazz and her powerful\, expressive voice. \nSince Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, Krut’s role has expanded from performer to witness. She travels to front-line communities to sing for soldiers\, then brings what she has seen to audiences abroad\, connecting cultural memory with the realities of war. Her concert is both musical and testimonial: a vivid encounter with Ukrainian tradition\, resilience and the human experience behind distant headlines. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Top Chefs
DESCRIPTION:A hit at the 2026 Summer Fest\, Top Chefs are a San Francisco hip-hop fusion band blending hip-hop\, jazz\, R&B and soul into a live experience that is both forward-thinking and rooted in tradition. With performances at the Barbican in London and the Vienna Hofburg Royal Palace\, they command stages across four continents. \nTheir lineup features an all-star cast led by emcee and frontman Afterthought\, with vocalists Sunday and ASH\, alongside Shogun on bass\, Loveberry on guitar\, Jabari on drums\, Des on keys\, Will Shannon on trombone and TJ on saxophone. The Top Chefs perform Afterthought’s original music alongside R&B\, soul and early 2000s classics\, and have backed legendary Bay Area artists including Mistah F.A.B.\, Nef The Pharaoh and Dru Down. \nMore than a backing band\, The Top Chefs create an immersive live experience that pushes musical boundaries while bringing audiences together. That spirit fuels Stoop Sessions\, their live performance series filmed on the stoop of Afterthought’s childhood home in the Fillmore District. What began when the band recorded a Tiny Desk audition on the front steps and drew a spontaneous crowd has grown into a viral\, community-rooted platform where a rotating cast of Bay Area artists have their songs reimagined live by the band. Paired with their 2026 debut album\, it’s a project born from a desire to bring joy to the neighborhoods that shaped them. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
