SUMMARY:Handel’s The Power of Music
DESCRIPTION:Fresh off his 2025 London Proms success with the Irish Baroque Orchestra\, Music Director Peter Whelan opens the 2026/27 subscription season with Handel’s Alexander’s Feast. Centered on a banquet honoring Alexander the Great\, the poet Timotheus uses song to guide the room from pride to tenderness\, from fury to reflection — a demonstration of music’s power to shape emotion and action. \nConcert Highlights\n\nThe concert features the 1742 Dublin version\, performed in Ireland just weeks before the world premiere of Messiah.\nThe work serves as a major showcase for the soloists and Philharmonia Chorale\, with arias\, ensembles\, and choruses that move the drama forward.\nHandel contrasts ceremonial brilliance with intimate reflection\, including music for trumpet and drums alongside lyrical writing for voices and strings.\nPhilharmonia performs on period instruments\, so you can hear the music much as audiences did in Handel’s time.\n\nPerformancesNovember 11 — Bing Concert Hall\, StanfordNovember 13 — Herbst Theatre\, San FranciscoNovember 14 — First Congregational Church of Berkeley\, Berkeley \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:William Kentridge’s The Head & the Load
DESCRIPTION:South African artist William Kentridge’s The Head & the Load brings dance\, projection\, speech\, song\, shadow play\, costume\, and music together to confront the largely untold history of more than two million Africans who labored\, fought\, and died during the First World War. The title comes from the Ghanaian proverb “The head and the load are the troubles of the neck\,” extending Kentridge’s investigation of history\, language\, and political and artistic movements. \nKentridge conceived and directs the work\, with music by Philip Miller\, choreography by Gregory Maqoma\, and music direction and additional composition by Thuthuka Sibisi. Staged on a vast scale\, the production combines multilingual texts by anticolonial writers and Dada poets with a score that interweaves traditional African songs and references to wartime European music by Satie\, Hindemith\, and Schoenberg. \nDeveloped with performers and collaborators across disciplines\, the work transforms archival absence into a layered historical pageant about colonialism\, memory\, sacrifice\, and whose stories survive.

SUMMARY:John Proctor Is the Villain
DESCRIPTION:In a one-stoplight town in Georgia\, in a high school AP English class\, five young women begin questioning the stories and the heroes they’ve been taught to believe in\, against a soundtrack of pop music and fury. As their class dissects a canonical work of literature\, the parallels between the play and their own lives become uncomfortably real\, and they begin to re-examine who we deem heroic\, who we call a villain\, and who gets burned in the process. \nIn a bold artistic collaboration\, three of the nation’s leading regional theaters join forces to bring Kimberly Belflower’s explosive coming-of-age story to the West Coast. Centering young voices\, this Broadway sensation and new cult classic ignites the kind of conversation that lingers long after the final bell. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \n  \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Tuba Skinny
DESCRIPTION:Tuba Skinny brings the streets of New Orleans to the Freight through traditional jazz\, country blues\, jug-band music\, spirituals\, ragtime and early R&B. The ensemble approaches the broad genealogy of American roots music with deep historical knowledge and an exuberance that makes songs from the 1920s and ’30s feel fully present. \nAfter years interpreting overlooked gems\, the band’s original album Magnolia Stroll extended that vocabulary with new compositions inspired by the musicians and neighborhoods that nurtured them. Cornet\, clarinet\, trombone\, banjo\, guitar\, tuba\, washboard and voice create a buoyant\, unamplified conversation—polished enough for concert halls\, but still shaped by the organic surprise and public spirit of street performance. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Emily Day Cosmo Alleycats
DESCRIPTION:Cosmo Alleycats have been a favorite of the San Francisco music scene since the band’s 2010 beginning. Led by jazz vocalist Emily Day\, “one of the major singers in her field” (Scott Yanow)\, the group endears audiences with inviting musicality and playful improvisation. \nThat approach makes quick converts of the jazz-curious while offering plenty to satisfy longtime devotees of the music. With sixteen years performing together\, Cosmo Alleycats is a well-oiled machine. But however polished their performance may be\, it’s their sense of playfulness that holds the door open for the unexpected. That dynamic runs through their albums Old Sweet Songs (2022) and More Sweet Songs (2026)\, collections of Tin Pan Alley and American Songbook favorites alongside original compositions inspired by bygone styles of songwriting. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Prokofiev’s ballet music for Romeo and Juliet is every bit as singular as the Shakespeare tragedy that inspired it: Savage and sensual\, tragic and comic\, it conveys all the passion of the play and loses none of its ambiguity. Debuting French conductor Marie Jacquot leads the Orchestra in the first SF Symphony performances of Andromède\, by her underrated fellow countrywoman Augusta Holmès. The symphonic poem infuses ancient Greek myth with Wagnerian grandeur. Inspired by the music of early Christianity\, Ottorino Respighi pulls off medieval plainsong with 20th-century pizzazz in his spellbinding Concerto gregoriano. Japanese violinist Sayaka Shoji summons up all of its enormous expressive power. \nInfo & Tickets

DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, the museums acquired a carved panel by the celebrated English Baroque woodcarver Grinling Gibbons\, known as the “Michelangelo of woodcarving.” It is one of only three works by Gibbons in an American museum collection. \nWhile investigations\, research\, and conservation work on the piece continue\, this joint lecture with David Oakey\, curator in charge of European decorative arts and sculpture\, and Linda Lin\, objects conservator\, is a chance to discuss the many discoveries and insights revealed in the two years since the panel’s arrival in San Francisco. This lecture will be recorded and available to watch on the source page after the event. \nAbout the speakers\nLinda Y. Lin is an objects conservator at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, where she works on three-dimensional works of art. Before joining FAMSF in 2023\, she held positions at Shangri La in Honolulu\, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City\, and the Newark Museum in New Jersey\, and was an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in objects conservation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nDavid Oakey is curator in charge of European decorative arts and sculpture at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. A fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a trustee of the Furniture History Society\, he has lectured internationally and published widely on decorative arts and historic interiors. \nAbout the “A Closer Look” series\nThis program is part of “A Closer Look\,” a curatorial lecture series exploring the development of the museums’ collections and their art historical significance. The series features in-depth presentations that highlight collection gems while demystifying creative practices spanning thousands of years. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Fiber Art Cards: Composing in Small Spaces
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is an invitation to play with materials on hand\, and we will discover what amazing works can be created with things we might otherwise toss. Composing in a limited space has many creative advantages for both experienced and new art-makers. It can help break through creative blocks and stimulate new ideas\, all without performance anxiety or a major investment of time and money. Using a variety of fabrics\, yarns\, threads\, papers\, and embellishments\, you will cut\, fold\, layer\, glue\, stitch\, mark\, and embellish to ultimately create an abstract composition. Your composition will fit inside a 5 x 7 Strathmore photo frame card\, and at the end of the workshop you will leave with two cards that may be further elaborated at home. Mirka Knaster creates 2-D and 3-D fiber art in her studio overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the Sonoma coast. She works with old and new textiles and handmade paper from Asia\, dyes used cloth with indigo and rust and incorporates design samples that would otherwise enter a landfill. With degrees in three cross-cultural fields\, she has found inspiration around the world and in her local environment. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in private collections across the U. S. She has taught a variety of classes in Northern California\, Chicago\, and Korea. \nShe was one of the founders of Korea Textile Tours and curated several exhibits of Korean fiber artists. A former board member of the Textile Arts Council\, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, and chairperson of the tours and workshops committee\, she organized fiber art events in the Greater Bay Area.
