SUMMARY:The Complete Philip Glass Piano Etudes
DESCRIPTION:Ten pianists from across the musical world—including Timo Andres\, Aaron Diehl\, Daniela Liebman\, and Jason Moran—come together for a marathon performance of Philip Glass’ complete Piano Etudes during the composer’s 90th-birthday year. Longtime Glass interpreters and special guests each bring a distinct perspective to this unusually personal body of work. \nAcross 20 etudes\, whirling arpeggios\, abrupt rhythmic and harmonic turns\, and meditative discipline form a musical self-portrait of Glass’ evolving practice. Heard complete\, the cycle reveals both the intimacy and inventive range of a composer whose language has reshaped contemporary music. Philip Glass will not be present.

SUMMARY:Sandra & Katrina Pacheco: Music of Amalia Rodrigues
DESCRIPTION:Mother and daughter Sandra and Katrina Pacheco carry the tradition of fado\, Portugal’s soulful song of longing and melancholy\, to Bay Area audiences. For this Break Room set\, they turn to the repertoire of Amalia Rodrigues\, the legendary “Queen of Fado” who did more than anyone to popularize the genre around the world and remains the best-selling Portuguese artist in the history of recorded music. \nSandra Pinheiro Pacheco was born in Pawtucket\, Rhode Island to Portuguese immigrants from the Azorean island of Faial. She loved singing as a child and started performing on stage as a sophomore at San Jose High School\, where she joined the choir as lead soprano\, studied Portuguese and was among the early participants in the International Baccalaureate program. It was there she first learned of Amalia in Portuguese class. When Manuel Escobar\, who had heard her sing many times\, encouraged her to consider fado\, she never dreamed she would come to love singing it. She gave her first fado performance in Santa Clara on March 14\, 2003 and has sung throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley ever since. \nKatrina Nicole Pacheco was born and raised in San José\, her father from the Azorean island of Graciosa and her mother from Pawtucket. Deeply involved in the Portuguese community\, she has danced in carnaval for 15 years and plays clarinet in a Portuguese marching band. She first sang fado at Sandra’s 2016 CD release party\, and in 2019 was honored to perform in the Azores. Now following in her mother’s footsteps\, she has performed at venues throughout California. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Jason Moran and the Harlem Hellfighters: James Reese Europe and the Absence of Ruin
DESCRIPTION:Pianist and composer Jason Moran’s multidisciplinary The Absence of Ruin examines the life and legacy of James Reese Europe\, the underrecognized Black American composer and bandleader who arrived in France with the Harlem Hellfighters in 1918. The celebrated all-Black military unit helped break the stalemate on the Western Front\, while Europe’s ensemble introduced a new spirit of jazz to a war-torn France fascinated by Black culture. \nMoran approaches that history as a meditation on memory in Black culture. His longtime Bandwagon collaborators—bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits—are joined by a seven-piece horn section\, with visual imagery by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young\, creating a layered tribute to Europe’s musical and cultural impact.

She began singing in Chicago clubs as a teenager\, then joined New York’s community of songwriters alongside Suzanne Vega\, Steve Forbert\, the Roches\, and frequent duet partner Shawn Colvin. \nKaplansky stepped away from an early musical rise to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology and work with patients\, but continued singing and eventually returned to recording and touring. SUMMARY:Jason Marsalis Quartet with Vanisha Gould
DESCRIPTION:Vibraphonist and drummer Jason Marsalis\, the youngest brother in New Orleans’ first family of jazz\, brings his quartet to SFJAZZ with vocalist Vanisha Gould. Marsalis built a career and co-founded the world-jazz group Los Hombres Calientes with percussionist Bill Summers. \nHis quartet combines chamber-ensemble writing\, blues and improvisation. Gould\, raised in Simi Valley and based in New York for the past decade\, draws inspiration from Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughan\, Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday; her 2024 album is She’s Not Shiny\, She’s Not Smooth. \nGould’s She’s Not Shiny\, She’s Not Smooth presents her original songs without overdubs or studio repairs. That emphasis on unpolished musical honesty complements the quartet’s responsive improvisation\, making the exchange between vocalist and band central to this collaboration. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
