SUMMARY:Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas
DESCRIPTION:Conductor and harpsichordist Maxim Emelyanychev leads Il Pomo d’Oro in concert performances of two Baroque tragedies: Carissimi’s oratorio Jephte and Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato sings Dido\, bringing her dramatic experience as the Queen of Carthage to Purcell’s complete opera and its devastating lament\, “When I am laid in earth.” \nThe cast also features tenor Nicholas Phan as Jephte and Aeneas\, mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor as the Sorceress\, countertenor Hugh Cutting as the Spirit\, soprano Song Hee Lee as Belinda\, soprano Jiayu Jin as the Second Woman and Filia\, tenor Massimo Altieri as the Sailor\, and sopranos Alena Dantcheva and Anna Piroli as the Enchantresses. The period ensemble brings freshness\, flexibility\, and close dramatic responsiveness to both works.

SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor performs Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. Soundtrack scorers and pop musicians love to borrow its tunes\, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming along. The Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky began his Technicolor orchestral fantasy Die Seejungfrau in 1902\, in the wake of a painful breakup. The music might have been loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid\, but the subject is just an excuse for the composer to express his own feelings of betrayal\, alienation\, and hopeless longing. Opening this program conducted by Juraj Valčuha is a new SF Symphony commission by Kyle Rivera\, winner of the Emerging Black Composers Project. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Titans of Choreography
DESCRIPTION:Titans of Choreography brings together three major European voices in a program that spans the precision of contemporary classicism\, sweeping lyricism and visceral dance theater. Hans van Manen’s Grosse Fuge strips movement to its sensual\, exacting core\, while Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour moves from crystalline virtuosity toward expansive romance. \nAkram Khan’s Dust completes the program with a haunting response to the legacy of World War I\, shaped by his distinctive fusion of South Asian and Western movement. The evening ranges across music by Ludwig van Beethoven\, Ezio Bosso and Antonio Vivaldi\, and Jocelyn Pook\, with costumes for Wheeldon’s ballet by Zac Posen.

SUMMARY:Van Zweden Conducts Beethoven 5
DESCRIPTION:Conductor Jaap van Zweden continues his Beethoven symphony cycle with the San Francisco Symphony. By this point we have all heard the main hook from Beethoven’s Fifth so many times that it’s hard to imagine a time when that relentless riff didn’t enjoy permanent earworm status. But in 1808\, when Beethoven unleashed it on an unsuspecting Vienna\, the shock of its radical simplicity hit like hardcore punk rock. Like a classic Marx Brothers movie\, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 is a carefully conceived celebration of chaos. Stylistically\, it looks back to the 18th century\, but the symphony’s best gags come at its own expense. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Danish String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Danish String Quartet returns with the ensemble chemistry and interpretive insight that have made it a favorite with Berkeley audiences. Its program blends a contemporary work by Berkeley native Gabriella Smith with landmark quartets by Shostakovich and Beethoven\, moving from rhythmic drive to introspection and late-period transcendence. \nSmith’s dynamic Carrot Revolution opens the program\, followed by Shostakovich’s String Quartet in F-sharp major\, Op. 142\, a work that gives the cello an unusually prominent role. Beethoven’s dramatic String Quartet in C-sharp minor\, Op. 131 closes the recital with one of the composer’s most profound continuous-form creations.

SUMMARY:J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew's Passion
DESCRIPTION:Conductor Masaaki Suzuki leads the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion during the work’s 300th-anniversary year. Scored for double choir\, double orchestra\, and vocal soloists\, Bach’s monumental setting of chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew combines biblical narrative with chorales and reflective arias. \nTenor Nick Pritchard sings the Evangelist and bass Florian Störtz portrays Jesus. The solo team also includes sopranos Carolyn Sampson and Jone Martínez\, altos Alexander Chance and Matthias Dähling\, tenor Hugo Hymas\, and bass Timothy Edlin. Together\, the performers illuminate the oratorio’s intense human drama\, moral conflict\, and spiritual scale.
