SUMMARY:2026 Litquake Festival
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco’s Litquake festival returns October 8–24 with a celebration of literature and the communities that create it. Presented by the Litquake Foundation\, the annual festival connects readers with writers through live literary programming\, conversation and readings. Its longstanding focus on Bay Area writing creates space for audiences to encounter different voices and engage with the ideas and issues shaping contemporary life. \nThe festival culminates on October 24 with Lit Crawl San Francisco\, a free literary gathering spread through the Mission District. Readings take place in settings ranging from bars\, cafes\, galleries and bookstores to less conventional neighborhood spaces. Festival events use multiple locations\, so visitors should consult the official schedule for each program’s venue\, admission details and any registration requirements. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Bat Week Screening of ‘The Invisible Mammal’
DESCRIPTION:The Citizens Environmental Council invites you to a free screening of an award-winning documentary highlighting the fight to save North American bats on Wednesday\, October 21\, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burlingame Community Center at 850 Burlingame Ave. in Burlingame. There is no charge for admission\, but pre-registration is required. \nJust in time for Halloween – and Bat Week! – “The Invisible Mammal” focuses on the plight of several species of North American bats now at risk because of a deadly fungal disease called White-nose Syndrome (WNS) and a team of women biologists determined to rescue these rapidly vanishing species. After a screening of the 90-minute film\, filmmaker Kristin Tièche will offer insights and answer questions about a strategy called Operation Fat Bat\, pioneered by women scientists\, that could rebuild healthy bat populations across North America. \nBats save U.S. agriculture billions of dollars in pesticide use each year\, and the decline of bat populations is linked to an increase in infant mortality where these pesticides are used. Since 2006\, WNS has decimated bat populations across 42 states and Canada\, killing millions of bats. \nFor more information\, visit cecburlingame.org or email info@cecburlingame.org. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Angela Davis in Conversation with Poulomi Saha
DESCRIPTION:Activist\, author\, educator\, and cultural icon Angela Davis reflects on more than 65 years of work across Black liberation\, feminism\, queer politics\, and prison abolition. From the international campaign for her freedom in the 1970s to her teaching\, organizing\, public speaking\, and 11 influential books\, Davis has remained a major voice in movements for racial and social justice. \nDavis takes Nina Simone’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” as a point of departure\, considering how the anthem’s vision of liberation can help people imagine freedom in the present. The event concludes with a conversation with Poulomi Saha\, UC Berkeley associate professor of English and chair of the Program in Critical Theory.

SUMMARY:Caribbean Cocktails: Migration\, Memory\, and Making Across the Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with After the Island: Ornament and Ceramic Practice in the Jamaican Diaspora\, this special First Thursday program brings together chef and cocktail creator Nelson German\, James Beard Award–winning cookbook writer and culinary anthropologist Andréa Lawson Gray\, in conversation moderated by Jamaican-born chef\, restaurateur\, and community leader Nigel Jones. \nInspired by the exhibition’s exploration of diaspora and reinvention\, the conversation turns to food and drink as living forms through which memory\, identity\, and cultural continuity are continually remade. Across ceramics\, food\, and drink\, the program considers how creative practices preserve lineage while embracing reinvention. These themes open onto broader questions: How is culture carried across time and distance? How do memory\, migration\, and rupture generate new forms of expression? What survives displacement\, and what must be reinvented? \nDrawing from the forthcoming book Caribbean Cocktails: Drinks & Bites from the Afro-Latino Diaspora\, the conversation explores how ingredients such as rum\, sugarcane\, citrus\, and botanicals hold histories of trade\, labor\, resistance\, and exchange. German and Lawson Gray consider the Caribbean not as a fixed geography\, but as a site of circulation where African\, Indigenous\, and European influences collided to produce new aesthetic and culinary languages. Drinks and bites from Caribbean Cocktails will follow the conversation. \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:A Closer Look: The Mysteries of a 17th-Century Carved Limewood Panel
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, the museums acquired a carved panel by the celebrated English Baroque woodcarver Grinling Gibbons\, known as the “Michelangelo of woodcarving.” It is one of only three works by Gibbons in an American museum collection. \nWhile investigations\, research\, and conservation work on the piece continue\, this joint lecture with David Oakey\, curator in charge of European decorative arts and sculpture\, and Linda Lin\, objects conservator\, is a chance to discuss the many discoveries and insights revealed in the two years since the panel’s arrival in San Francisco. This lecture will be recorded and available to watch on the source page after the event. \nAbout the speakers\nLinda Y. Lin is an objects conservator at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, where she works on three-dimensional works of art. Before joining FAMSF in 2023\, she held positions at Shangri La in Honolulu\, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City\, and the Newark Museum in New Jersey\, and was an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in objects conservation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nDavid Oakey is curator in charge of European decorative arts and sculpture at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He began his career at the British Royal Collection before serving as Director of Research for a leading New York art and antiques dealership and later as a curator for a major private art collection. He holds degrees from University College London and Buckingham University and is completing a part-time PhD at Cambridge University. A fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a trustee of the Furniture History Society\, he has lectured internationally and published widely on decorative arts and historic interiors. \nAbout the “A Closer Look” series\nThis program is part of “A Closer Look\,” a curatorial lecture series exploring the development of the museums’ collections and their art historical significance. The series features in-depth presentations that highlight collection gems while demystifying creative practices spanning thousands of years. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
