SUMMARY:Jonathan Karrant: The Johnny Mercer Songbook
DESCRIPTION:Singer Jonathan Karrant salutes the music of legendary lyricist Johnny Mercer. Mercer’s compositions made a significant impact on the Great American Songbook\, including songs like “Autumn Leaves\,” “Moon River\,” “Skylark\,” “Summer Wind” and so many more. Mercer was a top writer for Capitol Records in the 1950s and ’60s and collaborated with several iconic composers such as Henry Mancini\, Johnny Mandel and Harold Arlen\, just to name a few. \nHis songwriting was considered to be very prolific and provocative\, creating word images through his lyrics\, triggering thoughts and emotions. \nWith a repertoire that spans classic jazz standards and contemporary interpretations\, Karrant brings a modern elegance to the timeless genre of jazz. Karrant\, who has recorded several of Mercer’s songs\, will perform many of Mercer’s most popular hits on September 12\, 2026. Karrant will also give you a peek at some of the songs from his most recent album. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Top Chefs
DESCRIPTION:A hit at the 2026 Summer Fest\, Top Chefs are a San Francisco hip-hop fusion band blending hip-hop\, jazz\, R&B and soul into a live experience that is both forward-thinking and rooted in tradition. With performances at the Barbican in London and the Vienna Hofburg Royal Palace\, they command stages across four continents. \nTheir lineup features an all-star cast led by emcee and frontman Afterthought\, with vocalists Sunday and ASH\, alongside Shogun on bass\, Loveberry on guitar\, Jabari on drums\, Des on keys\, Will Shannon on trombone and TJ on saxophone. The Top Chefs perform Afterthought’s original music alongside R&B\, soul and early 2000s classics\, and have backed legendary Bay Area artists including Mistah F.A.B.\, Nef The Pharaoh and Dru Down. \nMore than a backing band\, The Top Chefs create an immersive live experience that pushes musical boundaries while bringing audiences together. That spirit fuels Stoop Sessions\, their live performance series filmed on the stoop of Afterthought’s childhood home in the Fillmore District. What began when the band recorded a Tiny Desk audition on the front steps and drew a spontaneous crowd has grown into a viral\, community-rooted platform where a rotating cast of Bay Area artists have their songs reimagined live by the band. Paired with their 2026 debut album\, it’s a project born from a desire to bring joy to the neighborhoods that shaped them. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Emily Day Cosmo Alleycats
DESCRIPTION:Cosmo Alleycats have been a favorite of the San Francisco music scene since the band’s 2010 beginning. Led by jazz vocalist Emily Day\, “one of the major singers in her field” (Scott Yanow)\, the group endears audiences with inviting musicality and playful improvisation. \nThat approach makes quick converts of the jazz-curious while offering plenty to satisfy longtime devotees of the music. With sixteen years performing together\, Cosmo Alleycats is a well-oiled machine. But however polished their performance may be\, it’s their sense of playfulness that holds the door open for the unexpected. That dynamic runs through their albums Old Sweet Songs (2022) and More Sweet Songs (2026)\, collections of Tin Pan Alley and American Songbook favorites alongside original compositions inspired by bygone styles of songwriting. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Black Nile
DESCRIPTION:Brothers Aaron and Lawrence Shaw\, performing as Black Nile\, see a different Los Angeles: not Hollywood’s fantasy but a city of improvisation\, fresh ideas and jazz\, built on deep Black and Latino roots. Born and raised in LA’s Inglewood neighborhood\, they came up in the city’s red-hot jazz scene\, rubbing shoulders with elder legends and next-gen stars alike. \nBoth with credits on Grammy Award-nominated projects\, saxophonist Aaron Shaw has played with contemporary greats from Tyler\, The Creator to Herbie Hancock\, was recently featured alongside Saul Williams and Carlos Niño and gave André 3000 flute lessons. Bassist Lawrence Shaw has backed John Legend\, Booker T. and the MG’s\, Aminé\, Nubya Garcia and Raphael Saadiq. Both seasoned touring musicians\, they formed Black Nile out of a desire to bring jazz into a new century\, adopting the sampling and modern production techniques they learned from hip-hop to make improvisation that is wildly inventive and combustible. \nNamed artists in residence at MASS MoCA in 2025\, Black Nile release their new album Indigo Garden on April 10\, 2026 on MASS MoCA Records\, featuring cover art from renowned conceptual artist Charles Gaines. Both an homage to the brothers’ LA roots and a bold step forward for the city’s jazz tradition\, it fills out the band with some of LA’s best players\, including keyboardists Luca Mendoza and Brian Hargrove and drummer Myles Martin. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Scott Amendola\, Jeff Parker & Paul Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Few drummers in jazz have collaborated as fruitfully with era-defining guitarists as Berkeley’s Scott Amendola\, who for this trio joins forces with the endlessly inventive guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Paul Bryan to celebrate their new album. For Amendola\, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. An ambitious composer\, bandleader\, electronics explorer and first-call accompanist\, he has forged a singular path within and beyond jazz through his work with a who’s who of inventive musicians\, among them Nels Cline\, Charlie Hunter\, Jim Campilongo\, Jenny Scheinman and Bill Frisell. \nHe first gained international attention as the only non-guitarist in T. J. Kirk\, the Grammy Award-nominated quartet\, and has toured and recorded with Hunter ever since. Over three decades the New Jersey native turned Bay Area force has built a large and varied body of work\, and since 2014 has served as an Associate Professor in UC Berkeley’s Jazz Program. \nGuitarist Jeff Parker\, a restlessly creative voice known for his work with Tortoise and a long line of genre-crossing projects\, is Amendola’s foil across several of his most acclaimed recordings. Bassist Paul Bryan\, a Grammy Award-winning producer best known for several albums by Aimee Mann\, anchors the low end. Released November 6\, 2026 on CD and vinyl by Jealous Butcher Records\, their album Scott Amendola Trio PDXMMXVIII with Jeff Parker and Paul Bryan draws much of its material from Lift\, Amendola’s acclaimed 2010 trio album with Parker. They bring that music to the stage in two one-hour\, separately ticketed sets at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Jack West: Guitars On Life with James Nash
