SUMMARY:Joshua Redman Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Berkeley-born saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman returns with his current quartet featuring pianist Paul Cornish\, bassist Philip Norris and drummer Nazir Ebo. \nThe ensemble performs music from Redman’s 2025 Blue Note album Words Fall Short\, a project centered on imperfection\, human feeling and collective interaction. Across more than 20 albums\, Redman has built a career as an improviser\, bandleader and former member of the SFJAZZ Collective. \nRedman assembled this group after the opening leg of the tour for his album Where Are We. For this quartet\, technical command matters alongside attentive listening: each musician’s individual voice contributes to group improvisation rather than standing apart from it. Words Fall Short is Redman’s second Blue Note release and his first with these players\, exploring the limits of language and the expressive possibilities of human imperfection. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Brandon Woody’s Upendo / Gabrielle Cavassa
DESCRIPTION:This concert\, part of Terence Blanchard’s UpSwing series\, shines a light on a pair of rising greats — trumpeter Brandon Woody and vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa — both rising artists with stunning debuts on Blue Note Records. \nStarting his musical journey at seven\, Brandon Woody is the most exciting young trumpeter of his generation. Already a veteran of work with Marc Cary\, Solange\, Robert Glasper\, and Danilo Pérez\, the Baltimore native will bring the stimulating compositions from his 2025 Blue Note debut\, For The Love Of It All\, with his hard-hitting band Upendo featuring keyboardist Troy Long\, bassist Michael Saunders\, and drummer Quincy Phillips. \nWoody made a major impression with Upendo during his appearance at the 42nd San Francisco Jazz Festival\, and his Miner Auditorium debut will be a night to remember. \nVocalist and songwriter Gabrielle Cavassa\, co-winner of the 2021 International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition\, is best known to SFJAZZ audiences for her stunning performances with Joshua Redman’s quartet. She fell in love with jazz while attending San Francisco State and it was the city’s jazz scene that she credits for her “real education.” Since relocating to New Orleans in 2017\, she’s thrived as a performer\, bandleader\, and composer\, earning critical raves for her eponymous 2020 debut album. \nHer Blue Note debut\, Diavola\, features Redman\, Jeff Parker\, Larry Grenadier\, Paul Cornish\, and Brian Blade. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Emily Day Cosmo Alleycats
DESCRIPTION:Cosmo Alleycats have been a favorite of the San Francisco music scene since the band’s 2010 beginning. Led by jazz vocalist Emily Day\, “one of the major singers in her field” (Scott Yanow)\, the group endears audiences with inviting musicality and playful improvisation. \nThat approach makes quick converts of the jazz-curious while offering plenty to satisfy longtime devotees of the music. With sixteen years performing together\, Cosmo Alleycats is a well-oiled machine. But however polished their performance may be\, it’s their sense of playfulness that holds the door open for the unexpected. That dynamic runs through their albums Old Sweet Songs (2022) and More Sweet Songs (2026)\, collections of Tin Pan Alley and American Songbook favorites alongside original compositions inspired by bygone styles of songwriting. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Black Nile
DESCRIPTION:Brothers Aaron and Lawrence Shaw\, performing as Black Nile\, see a different Los Angeles: not Hollywood’s fantasy but a city of improvisation\, fresh ideas and jazz\, built on deep Black and Latino roots. Born and raised in LA’s Inglewood neighborhood\, they came up in the city’s red-hot jazz scene\, rubbing shoulders with elder legends and next-gen stars alike. \nBoth with credits on Grammy Award-nominated projects\, saxophonist Aaron Shaw has played with contemporary greats from Tyler\, The Creator to Herbie Hancock\, was recently featured alongside Saul Williams and Carlos Niño and gave André 3000 flute lessons. Bassist Lawrence Shaw has backed John Legend\, Booker T. and the MG’s\, Aminé\, Nubya Garcia and Raphael Saadiq. Both seasoned touring musicians\, they formed Black Nile out of a desire to bring jazz into a new century\, adopting the sampling and modern production techniques they learned from hip-hop to make improvisation that is wildly inventive and combustible. \nNamed artists in residence at MASS MoCA in 2025\, Black Nile release their new album Indigo Garden on April 10\, 2026 on MASS MoCA Records\, featuring cover art from renowned conceptual artist Charles Gaines. Both an homage to the brothers’ LA roots and a bold step forward for the city’s jazz tradition\, it fills out the band with some of LA’s best players\, including keyboardists Luca Mendoza and Brian Hargrove and drummer Myles Martin. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Jason Marsalis Quartet with Vanisha Gould
DESCRIPTION:Vibraphonist and drummer Jason Marsalis\, the youngest brother in New Orleans’ first family of jazz\, brings his quartet to SFJAZZ with vocalist Vanisha Gould. Marsalis built a career and co-founded the world-jazz group Los Hombres Calientes with percussionist Bill Summers. \nHis quartet combines chamber-ensemble writing\, blues and improvisation. Gould\, raised in Simi Valley and based in New York for the past decade\, draws inspiration from Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughan\, Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday; her 2024 album is She’s Not Shiny\, She’s Not Smooth. \nGould’s She’s Not Shiny\, She’s Not Smooth presents her original songs without overdubs or studio repairs. That emphasis on unpolished musical honesty complements the quartet’s responsive improvisation\, making the exchange between vocalist and band central to this collaboration. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Scott Amendola\, Jeff Parker & Paul Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Few drummers in jazz have collaborated as fruitfully with era-defining guitarists as Berkeley’s Scott Amendola\, who for this trio joins forces with the endlessly inventive guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Paul Bryan to celebrate their new album. For Amendola\, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. An ambitious composer\, bandleader\, electronics explorer and first-call accompanist\, he has forged a singular path within and beyond jazz through his work with a who’s who of inventive musicians\, among them Nels Cline\, Charlie Hunter\, Jim Campilongo\, Jenny Scheinman and Bill Frisell. \nHe first gained international attention as the only non-guitarist in T. J. Kirk\, the Grammy Award-nominated quartet\, and has toured and recorded with Hunter ever since. Over three decades the New Jersey native turned Bay Area force has built a large and varied body of work\, and since 2014 has served as an Associate Professor in UC Berkeley’s Jazz Program. \nGuitarist Jeff Parker\, a restlessly creative voice known for his work with Tortoise and a long line of genre-crossing projects\, is Amendola’s foil across several of his most acclaimed recordings. Bassist Paul Bryan\, a Grammy Award-winning producer best known for several albums by Aimee Mann\, anchors the low end. Released November 6\, 2026 on CD and vinyl by Jealous Butcher Records\, their album Scott Amendola Trio PDXMMXVIII with Jeff Parker and Paul Bryan draws much of its material from Lift\, Amendola’s acclaimed 2010 trio album with Parker. They bring that music to the stage in two one-hour\, separately ticketed sets at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
