DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this ensemble drum performance by Heiwa Taiko as they fill the museum’s first floor with the spiritually resonant rhythms of taiko\, a two-thousand-year-old art form known as “the heartbeat of Japan.” \nHeiwa (“hay-wah”) Taiko is a group of dynamic and energetic grandmothers with an average age of 70 who love to spread the art and beauty of Taiko. Using 19-inch drums which they make themselves\, Heiwa Taiko’s performances create a dynamic sound that encompasses the mind\, body\, and spirit. SUMMARY:FX Harsono: Writing in the Rain
DESCRIPTION:In this poetic video installation\, the artist’s act of writing his own name becomes a reclamation of erased identity. \nAt the center of this solo presentation by FX Harsono (b. 1949)\, one of Indonesia’s most important contemporary artists\, is a powerful\, multi-part video installation. In this six-minute film\, Harsono explores memory\, identity\, and rediscovery in the aftermath of state oppression. While rooted in a specific history of government repression\, the work carries continued resonance today\, as language and appearance continue to serve as markers of discrimination. \nMore than a historical record\, Harsono’s work conveys the personal and collective trauma of cultural erasure through symbolic imagery: the artist paints his forbidden Chinese birth name on glass in the rain\, while three children’s desks evoke classrooms where Chinese language instruction was banned under Indonesia’s Suharto regime (1967–1998). SUMMARY:A Sound Work by Lala Rukh: Subh-e-Umeed
DESCRIPTION:Sounds of daybreak and protest fill Samsung Hall with an atmosphere of awakening and possibility. \nSubh-e-Umeed marks the first exhibition on the West Coast of work by Pakistani artist and activist Lala Rukh (1948–2017). A sonic archive of a morning in Lahore (the artist’s birthplace) during Pakistan’s politically fraught Lawyer Movement\, Subh-e-Umeed begins with birdsong at daybreak. As a crowd gathers to protest outside the city’s High Court\, the sound of marching and chanted slogans builds\, ending with strands of Hindustani classical music and vocals by Sarah Zaman. \n“Lala Rukh’s practice regularly engaged with music and recordings. In this work\, that engagement comes together with her rigorous exploration of inventive\, delicate forms of notation to record changes over time\,” says exhibition curator Padma Dorje Maitland\, the Malavalli Family Foundation Associate Curator of the Art of the Indian Subcontinent at the Asian Art Museum.
