SUMMARY:Kim Minwook: On Carving\, Bending\, and Binding Wood
DESCRIPTION:Kim Minwook (b. 1978\, South Korea) works with wood shaped by weather\, time\, and nature. Attentive to his raw material\, Kim responds to the grain\, tension\, and movement already present\, and allows cracks\, knots\, or scars to inform the work\, thus carrying forth the life of the tree into sculpture. “The wood itself is an active presence\,” says Assistant Curator of Korean Art Yoon-Jee Choi\, “not simply an object shaped by the artist\, but a collaborator.” \nKim’s adventurous approach to his medium is on full display in his first solo museum exhibition\, On Carving\, Bending\, and Binding Wood. A self-taught craftsman\, Kim discovered his passion for woodturning in 2013 and earned swift recognition\, receiving the 2019 Lexus Creative Masters Award in Seoul\, and shortlisted for the 2022 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize. Kim continues to reimagine contemporary craft through a practice grounded in listening to material\, time\, and the quiet narratives held within wood. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Art from Contemporary Cambodia
DESCRIPTION:Two leading Cambodian artists draw from memory\, history\, and the environmental crisis to create striking mixed-media art. \nBeyond the ancient temples of Angkor lies a deeply compelling contemporary art scene. This exhibition spotlights works by Sopheap Pich and Leang Seckon\, two of Cambodia’s most internationally prominent artists. Born in the 1970s\, both lived through the Khmer Rouge genocide and emerged in the early 2000s as key figures in the country’s artistic revival. \nWhile their styles differ greatly\, both artists transform everyday materials from Cambodia in distinctive ways. Seckon\, using photographs\, paint\, and recycled textiles\, builds collages that contemplate the traumas of the past and the complexities of the present. Pich uses natural materials and discarded objects to craft tactile\, abstract sculptures\, which he sees as distillations of his remembrances and emotions. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Garuda in Bali
DESCRIPTION:Remarkable Balinese sculptures and paintings unfold the epic story of the bird-warrior who became the national symbol of Indonesia. \nFrom his birth as a precious egg to his decision to serve as the vehicle of the Hindu god Vishnu\, the divine adventures of Garuda come to life in this evocative exhibition. Part-bird\, part-man\, and the epitome of loyalty and courage\, Garuda holds profound significance not only as a fierce warrior\, but as the archetype of a deeply devoted son. \nFeaturing wooden sculptures and traditional paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, the exhibition traces Garuda’s legendary exploits\, capturing both the artistic mastery of Balinese creators and the enduring spiritual resonance of a protector deity who remains central to Indonesian culture today. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Ha Chong-Hyun: Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:A sensory journey through sixty years of innovative abstraction. \nFor over six decades\, pioneering artist Ha Chong-Hyun (b. 1935) has explored what painting becomes when freed from all existing conventions. Ha’s work prizes the interaction of his materials: using pressure\, gravity\, and tools ranging from torches to everyday utensils\, he transforms the surfaces of canvases up to eight feet tall into a treasure trove of texture and physicality. His first museum exhibition in North America\, Ha Chong-Hyun: Retrospective offers an unprecedented look at the creative evolution of one of Korea’s most influential contemporary artists. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Vishnu’s Cosmic Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Asia’s largest ancient bronze makes a once-in-a-lifetime stop in San Francisco. \nA thousand years ago\, a colossal statue of the Hindu god Vishnu reclined on a serpent-shaped pedestal in a temple in the Cambodian kingdom of Angkor. Newly conserved\, this national treasure has toured four major institutions worldwide in the past year. The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is the only West Coast venue where the monumental statue can be seen before it returns to Cambodia. \nFor the first time in centuries\, audiences can experience the full\, nearly twenty-foot-long scale of “the most important bronze artwork of Cambodia\,” says Chhay Visoth\, director of the National Museum of Cambodia. “This is the last chance that this great masterpiece will be out of the country\,” notes Visoth. \nThe awe-inspiring West Mebon Reclining Vishnu offers a window onto the grandeur and sophistication of the Khmer civilization. “Cambodia takes immense pride in the creations of our ancestors\,” says Minister of Culture and Fine Arts Phoeurng Sackona\, “whose works\, despite being thousands of years old\, continue to serve as the nation’s greatest cultural ambassadors on the world stage.” \nThe statue’s original location — a temple surrounded by the expansive waters of a reservoir — echoes the Hindu creation story in which a sleeping Vishnu\, drifting in the primordial “cosmic ocean” atop a coiled serpent\, dreams the universe into existence\, explains exhibition curator Natasha Reichle\, associate curator of Southeast Asian Art at the Asian Art Museum. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
