SUMMARY:The Australian Ballet: Oscar© by Christopher Wheeldon
DESCRIPTION:The Australian Ballet returns to Berkeley with Christopher Wheeldon’s Oscar\, a visionary ballet inspired by the life\, writing\, and cultural legacy of Oscar Wilde. Developed by Wheeldon and composer Joby Talbot from an original idea with Alexander Wise\, the work intertwines Wilde’s biography with characters and images from his stories to explore romance\, sacrifice\, and forbidden love. \nWheeldon’s choreography unfolds to Talbot’s lush score\, performed live by the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. Jean-Marc Puissant created the stage and costume design\, Jon Goldman designed the lighting\, and David Bergman created the video design\, combining dance\, music\, and an intricate visual world in a production first premiered by The Australian Ballet in 2024.

SUMMARY:Jean Rondeau\, harpsichord: An All-French Baroque Program
DESCRIPTION:French harpsichordist Jean Rondeau returns with an all-French Baroque recital that treats the instrument as a living source of color\, imagination\, and expressive freedom. A leading international advocate for the harpsichord\, Rondeau draws on historically informed practice without allowing convention to limit the music’s freshness. \nThe program includes Louis Couperin’s Suite in D major; Rameau’s Prelude in A minor and Suite in A major; François Couperin’s Prelude in C major from L’Art de toucher le clavecin\, “La Ténébreuse\,” and “La Favorite”; and Royer’s brilliant “La marche des Scythes.”

SUMMARY:William Kentridge’s The Head & the Load
DESCRIPTION:South African artist William Kentridge’s The Head & the Load brings dance\, projection\, speech\, song\, shadow play\, costume\, and music together to confront the largely untold history of more than two million Africans who labored\, fought\, and died during the First World War. The title comes from the Ghanaian proverb “The head and the load are the troubles of the neck\,” extending Kentridge’s investigation of history\, language\, and political and artistic movements. \nKentridge conceived and directs the work\, with music by Philip Miller\, choreography by Gregory Maqoma\, and music direction and additional composition by Thuthuka Sibisi. Staged on a vast scale\, the production combines multilingual texts by anticolonial writers and Dada poets with a score that interweaves traditional African songs and references to wartime European music by Satie\, Hindemith\, and Schoenberg. \nDeveloped with performers and collaborators across disciplines\, the work transforms archival absence into a layered historical pageant about colonialism\, memory\, sacrifice\, and whose stories survive.

SUMMARY:The Complete Philip Glass Piano Etudes
DESCRIPTION:Ten pianists from across the musical world—including Timo Andres\, Aaron Diehl\, Daniela Liebman\, and Jason Moran—come together for a marathon performance of Philip Glass’ complete Piano Etudes during the composer’s 90th-birthday year. Longtime Glass interpreters and special guests each bring a distinct perspective to this unusually personal body of work. \nAcross 20 etudes\, whirling arpeggios\, abrupt rhythmic and harmonic turns\, and meditative discipline form a musical self-portrait of Glass’ evolving practice. Heard complete\, the cycle reveals both the intimacy and inventive range of a composer whose language has reshaped contemporary music. Philip Glass will not be present.

SUMMARY:Jason Moran and the Harlem Hellfighters: James Reese Europe and the Absence of Ruin
DESCRIPTION:Pianist and composer Jason Moran’s multidisciplinary The Absence of Ruin examines the life and legacy of James Reese Europe\, the underrecognized Black American composer and bandleader who arrived in France with the Harlem Hellfighters in 1918. The celebrated all-Black military unit helped break the stalemate on the Western Front\, while Europe’s ensemble introduced a new spirit of jazz to a war-torn France fascinated by Black culture. \nMoran approaches that history as a meditation on memory in Black culture. His longtime Bandwagon collaborators—bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits—are joined by a seven-piece horn section\, with visual imagery by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young\, creating a layered tribute to Europe’s musical and cultural impact.

DESCRIPTION:Cirque Kalabanté’s WOW (World of Words) is a high-energy visual spectacle that brings traditional African movement and music into the Montreal circus tradition. Through explosive drumming\, dance\, and precision acrobatics\, the production explores how knowledge passes between people\, how cultures meet\, and how shared respect can become a source of wonder. \nThe troupe is led by Yamoussa Bangoura\, a multidisciplinary artist of Guinean origin who founded a circus-arts school and built a company devoted to African arts. SUMMARY:Ambrose Akinmusire & Aszure Barton: A a | a B : B E N D
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer and director Aszure Barton and Oakland composer-trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire create an urgent stage world where dance and live music meet in friction\, tension\, intimacy\, and explosive beauty. Barton\, known for probing complex emotional terrain and dismantling the visible conventions of ballet technique\, brings her distinctive movement language to a collaboration built around the physical experience of being together. \nAkinmusire performs his score live on trumpet and electronics\, placing the musician among the dancers rather than apart from them. The result is a provocative\, continuously shifting encounter in which sound and movement test one another and search for new patterns of connection.

SUMMARY:Takács Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Takács Quartet returns with new cellist Mihai Marica for a program that sets Beethoven’s deeply personal late style beside Mozart and a contemporary work rooted in Black American history. The ensemble approaches the repertory with the refinement and vitality that have made it a longtime Cal Performances favorite. \nMozart’s String Quartet in F major\, K. 590 opens the recital. Carlos Simon’s Warmth from Other Suns draws inspiration from the Great Migration and the stories of Black Americans who resettled in northern cities during the 20th century. Beethoven’s innovative String Quartet in B-flat major\, Op. 130 is performed with the dance-like finale published with the work.

SUMMARY:Mitsuko Uchida\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Mitsuko Uchida returns to Berkeley in a solo recital devoted to composers she has explored across decades of performances and recordings. Celebrated for sensitivity\, clarity\, and deep musical insight\, Uchida was named Musical America’s 2022 Artist of the Year and has held a major artistic leadership role at the Marlboro Music Festival for more than 20 years. \nHer program moves through sharply contrasting worlds: Haydn’s inventive Variations in F minor\, Schoenberg’s compressed Six Little Piano Pieces\, Mozart’s playful yet searching Rondo in A minor\, Kurtág’s miniature Márta ligaturája\, and Schubert’s expansive late Piano Sonata in A major\, D. 959.

SUMMARY:Attacca Quartet with Caroline Shaw
DESCRIPTION:The Attacca Quartet opens its Cal Performances residency with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw\, who joins the ensemble on voice and violin. Their creative partnership has already produced two Grammy-winning recordings—Orange and Evergreen—and continues to explore the porous boundary between art song and chamber music. \nShaw’s writing brings vocal expression\, string texture\, joy\, and an untamed sense of discovery into the quartet setting. The performance showcases an ensemble-composer relationship in which the creators’ shared history is as important as the individual works; detailed program notes will be announced closer to the performance.

SUMMARY:Compagnie Hervé Koubi: Sol Invictus
DESCRIPTION:French Algerian choreographer Hervé Koubi directs 17 dancers from around the world in Sol Invictus\, a gravity-defying work about the sustaining power of community. The company combines contemporary dance with the athletic force of hip-hop and the precision of martial arts\, sending bodies through high-speed arcs\, spins\, and tightly coordinated encounters. \nA driving cinematic score by Mikael Karlsson and Maxime Bodson is interwoven with music by Steve Reich. Through its blend of physical risk and collective discipline\, the work argues that connection and shared purpose can answer a fractured world.
