SUMMARY:Artist Talk by Lily Hope and Sydney Akagi
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth talk with Lily Hope and Sydney Akagi as they discuss the museum’s commission of a Chilkat dancing blanket and their art practice. Together\, they share more about the Chilkat style of weaving and their personal work. \nAbout the artists\nLily Hope (b. 1980) was born and raised in Juneau\, Alaska. She is Tlingit\, of the Raven moiety\, and of her grandmother’s clan\, the T’akdeintaan. She learned Ravenstail weaving from her late mother\, Clarissa Rizal\, and Kay Field Parker. She also apprenticed for over a decade in Chilkat weaving with Rizal\, one of the last living apprentices of the late master Chilkat weaver Jennie Thlunaut. Hope is committed to co-creating and teaching the technical and spiritual practices in these two premiere finger-twined textiles. She spearheads multicommunity volunteer weaver projects\, including Weaving Our Pride. \nSydney Akagi (Tlingit) is a Chilkat and Ravenstail weaver working at the intersection of Indigenous knowledge systems\, contemporary form\, and environmental advocacy. Rooted in Lingít Aaní (Southeast Alaska)\, Akagi’s work is informed by an ongoing relationship to the Taku River and its salmon systems. SUMMARY:Voices of Contemporary Artists Lecture Featuring Narsiso Martinez
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 8th annual Voices of Contemporary Artists Lecture. This year\, the museums welcome Narsiso Martinez\, known for portraits made on discarded produce boxes that champion the dignity of migrant workers. \nAbout the artist\nNarsiso Martinez moved from Oaxaca\, Mexico\, to Los Angeles at age 20 to begin his artistic career. His portraits\, set in agricultural landscapes\, blend charcoal\, gold leaf\, and gouache on cardboard produce boxes. Martinez draws from a decade of experience as a seasonal farm laborer to fund his education. \nSince his 2018 solo debut\, exhibitions including Super Fresh and Rethinking Essential have celebrated the often-invisible laborers who “feed America.” Martinez’s work is held in major institutions\, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum\, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. \nThe annual Voices of Contemporary Artists Lecture brings artists to the museums to inspire staff\, guides\, and the broader community through contemporary art practices. This exhibition\, co-organized with the Brooklyn Museum\, is the first dedicated to Monet’s Venetian cityscapes since their debut over a century ago. SUMMARY:Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together two seemingly distinct art forms: Pueblo pottery and classic cars. In 2014\, Rose B. Simpson\, a mixed-media artist from Santa Clara Pueblo\, New Mexico\, refurbished a 1985 Chevy El Camino\, transforming it with a black-on-black Tewa pottery motif. Simpson titled her work Maria in honor of renowned artist Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo\, 1887–1980)\, who popularized the distinctive black-on-black style. SUMMARY:About Place: Bay Area Artists from the Svane Gift
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is the second in a series highlighting contemporary Bay Area artists in our collection. The installation explores how artists relate to their environments through place: place as the physical land\, place as heritage\, place as the imaginary\, and place as belonging. \nSeveral artists examine climate change and its local impact. In Saif Azzuz’s Lo’op’ (It burns) (2021)\, he draws the color palette from maps of the 2021 droughts and fires in California. Other artists use found materials not only to address ecological issues but also to add layers of meaning\, such as in Guillermo Galindo’s Listo (Ready to Go) (2015)\, made from a broken bicycle and chair he found along the US-Mexico border. And others play with figure and ground: Clare Rojas’s Walking in Rainbow Rain (2021) is a meditation on disappearing into one’s environment. \nInfo & Tickets
