SUMMARY:Heiwa Taiko Performance
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this ensemble drum performance by Heiwa Taiko as they fill the museum’s first floor with the spiritually resonant rhythms of taiko\, a two-thousand-year-old art form known as “the heartbeat of Japan.” \nHeiwa (“hay-wah”) Taiko is a group of dynamic and energetic grandmothers with an average age of 70 who love to spread the art and beauty of Taiko. Using 19-inch drums which they make themselves\, Heiwa Taiko’s performances create a dynamic sound that encompasses the mind\, body\, and spirit. They are based at Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church in Union City\, CA. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:FX Harsono: Writing in the Rain
DESCRIPTION:In this poetic video installation\, the artist’s act of writing his own name becomes a reclamation of erased identity. \nAt the center of this solo presentation by FX Harsono (b. 1949)\, one of Indonesia’s most important contemporary artists\, is a powerful\, multi-part video installation. In this six-minute film\, Harsono explores memory\, identity\, and rediscovery in the aftermath of state oppression. While rooted in a specific history of government repression\, the work carries continued resonance today\, as language and appearance continue to serve as markers of discrimination. \nMore than a historical record\, Harsono’s work conveys the personal and collective trauma of cultural erasure through symbolic imagery: the artist paints his forbidden Chinese birth name on glass in the rain\, while three children’s desks evoke classrooms where Chinese language instruction was banned under Indonesia’s Suharto regime (1967–1998). Writing in the Rain chronicles the artist’s journey to relearn and reclaim his language as an adult\, transforming a painful history of persecution into a poetic act of recovery. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:Al-An deSouza: Table Settings
DESCRIPTION:An ambitious watercolor project connects the museum collection to moments of beauty in overlooked places\, starting with the ground beneath our feet. \nAl-An deSouza’s Table Settings invites viewers into a world of textures and details inspired by the permanent galleries of the Asian Art Museum and informed by the artist’s practice of photographing the streets while walking\, attending closely to their “cracks and stains\, signage and markings\, bumps and dips\, and potential slips and trips.” The work was created over months at a living room table; each session began with a pot of tea\, remnants of which formed the ground of that day’s painting. \nLayering elements that are rarefied and humble\, intentional and unplanned\, Table Settings offers a meditation on where we find value and beauty\, both in the galleries and beyond. deSouza describes taking inspiration from a uniquely attuned movement through their surroundings: “looking down\, watching your step\, accepting one’s connection to the baseness of matter.” \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:A Sound Work by Lala Rukh: Subh-e-Umeed
DESCRIPTION:Sounds of daybreak and protest fill Samsung Hall with an atmosphere of awakening and possibility. \nSubh-e-Umeed marks the first exhibition on the West Coast of work by Pakistani artist and activist Lala Rukh (1948–2017). A sonic archive of a morning in Lahore (the artist’s birthplace) during Pakistan’s politically fraught Lawyer Movement\, Subh-e-Umeed begins with birdsong at daybreak. As a crowd gathers to protest outside the city’s High Court\, the sound of marching and chanted slogans builds\, ending with strands of Hindustani classical music and vocals by Sarah Zaman. \n“Lala Rukh’s practice regularly engaged with music and recordings. In this work\, that engagement comes together with her rigorous exploration of inventive\, delicate forms of notation to record changes over time\,” says exhibition curator Padma Dorje Maitland\, the Malavalli Family Foundation Associate Curator of the Art of the Indian Subcontinent at the Asian Art Museum. While Subh-e-Umeed is unique as a sound work\, it offers a fitting introduction to this influential and dedicated advocate for women’s rights\, says Maitland\, “inviting audiences into the feeling of hope on the cusp of change.” \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets

SUMMARY:This Asian American Life
DESCRIPTION:A child’s perspective reveals moments of beauty and wonder amid daily life in Chinatown. \nCommissioned by the Asian Art Museum for the Lawrence and Gorretti Lui Hyde Street Art Wall\, Kayan Cheung-Miaw’s This Asian American Life asks: How might a child experience San Francisco’s Chinatown? In a series of panels\, the mural slows the hectic pace of city life to highlight the special moments a child might focus on. \n“My own time spent walking the streets of Chinatown takes me into a space where the sights\, sounds\, and people — their lives and especially their struggles — feel deeply familiar\,” says Cheung-Miaw. “A child\, by contrast\, has the ability to get absorbed in and find wonder in almost anything.” \nThe mural depicts this working-class neighborhood — full of bustling restaurants\, restaurant workers\, crowded rooms\, and public life — reflected through a child’s sensory experience of daily instances and encounters: the wings of a bee\, the scent of a bowl of noodles\, a cook taking a break\, a bus driver waving hello\, and the music from a gāo hú. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
