DESCRIPTION:Mildred Howard: Poetics of Memory is the first major museum exhibition to celebrate the work of the beloved Bay Area artist. Spanning Howard’s five-decade practice\, the exhibition brings together her renowned collages\, found-object sculptures and immersive installations exploring memory\, identity and the African American experience. \nNew and never-before-seen pieces appear alongside archival materials from Howard’s Oakland studio\, illuminating the cultural currents and lived experiences that shape her practice. Born in San Francisco and raised in Berkeley\, Howard has drawn on textiles\, African Diasporic dance\, personal history and collective memory throughout her career. \nHer monumental public artworks across the Bay Area have highlighted often-overlooked histories\, from the Black shipworkers of Hunters Point to the musicians who defined San Francisco jazz. SUMMARY:BeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Can looking closely at photographs change what we see\, know and feel about history? Japanese artist Masaki Fujihata explores that question through immersive installations of historic images and augmented-reality experiences that bring visitors into the events of 1942\, before Japanese Americans in Oakland\, San Francisco and Los Angeles were transported to concentration camps during World War II. \nFujihata spent years examining photographs by Dorothea Lange and Russell Lee\, enlarging and activating their images to focus attention on each subject’s emotions and the power dynamics between the photographer and the person in front of the camera. \nOMCA’s presentation includes new Bay Area-specific elements drawn from Lange’s photographs of San Francisco and Oakland\, plus a three-screen video featuring local residents and an outdoor augmented-reality experience in Oak Street Plaza. \n(Check organizer/venue website to confirm event details.) \nInfo & Tickets
