Model

The sly, seductive Model peels back the layers on the inner workings of Zoli, a New York fashion modeling agency, and the labor of the statuesque men and women represented there. The glamour of their work is presented in contrast with the discomfort, repetition, and rejection that comes with the territory, as prospective models are literally cut down to size. As one of the agents sighs, head shaking, “That’s too short for what we do.” Frederick Wiseman is in his element when capturing others’ precision directing of photo shoots and television commercials in a pre–digital touchup world, while Andy Warhol’s mid-movie cameo emphasizes the self-reflexive nature of photographing the photographers.
