March 29 - April 3

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

COUNTDOWN to…

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

This event is in-progress or has passed.

Only a pandemic could keep the Ailey company away from the UC Berkeley campus, where it has been performing regularly for more than half a century—appearing at Zellerbach Hall more than any other place in the world outside of New York City.

Following the smashing success of its video presentation for Cal Performances at Home this June, the peerless Ailey dancers return—in person again after two long years!—as the company resumes its annual residency with programs that uplift and inspire. Under the leadership of Robert Battle, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues to embody the legacy of its founder by celebrating artistic excellence, unbounded creativity, and the power of art to transform and engage.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater makes its long awaited return to Cal Performances with five thrilling programs. This season brings the West Coast Premiere of the live, staged version of Ailey Resident Choreographer Jamar Roberts’ Holding Space following its World Premiere for Cal Performances at Home last June. Plus, celebrate Robert Battle’s 10th Anniversary as Artistic Director with a special program of some of his most beloved works and the Bay Area Premiere of his new work, For Four; and celebrate the legacy of Alvin Ailey with a program exclusively featuring Ailey ballets.
