Black Creativity
Black Creativity, presented by the San Francisco African American Historical and Cultural Society, highlights four individuals whose artistic, civic, and cultural contributions shaped their communities.
The exhibition introduces Sargent Claude Johnson, a celebrated Bay Area artist who built a distinguished career despite the barriers confronting Black artists; Montford Cardwell, a multidisciplinary San Francisco artist active during the 1960s and 1970s; Mary Ellen Pleasant, the civic leader, philanthropist, and civil-rights advocate; and Carlos Martinez, creator of The American Experience 1900–1950. African sculptures displayed alongside their work illuminate artistic connections and sources of inspiration across traditions.
