“Get Free” Hip Hop Dance Festival 2024

GET FREE is a weeklong hip hop dance festival rooted in the artistry of free styling, experimental battling, healing through community practices, and love for Black social dance and our Bay Area street community. 2024 marks the 5th festival year.
An informal work-in-progress showing of Embodiment Project’s newest work, Belly of the Whale is a multidisciplinary street dance theater production featuring live music, choreopoetry, and documentary theater. Inspired by the myth of “Jonah and the Whale” and Valerie Kaur’s Revolutionary Love Project, specifically their shared assertion that love, compassion and opportunities for transformative healing are due to all, including those who have caused great harm. Belly… radically challenges the current trends of spiritual bypass, “cancelling”, and the binaries of “good” and “bad”, “victim” and “perpetrator”, through personal narratives with survivors of childhood sexual abuse and formerly incarcerated people.
