Jason Marsalis Quartet with Vanisha Gould

Vibraphonist and drummer Jason Marsalis, the youngest brother in New Orleans’ first family of jazz, brings his quartet to SFJAZZ with vocalist Vanisha Gould. Marsalis built a career and co-founded the world-jazz group Los Hombres Calientes with percussionist Bill Summers.
His quartet combines chamber-ensemble writing, blues and improvisation. Gould, raised in Simi Valley and based in New York for the past decade, draws inspiration from Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday; her 2024 album is She’s Not Shiny, She’s Not Smooth.
Gould’s She’s Not Shiny, She’s Not Smooth presents her original songs without overdubs or studio repairs. That emphasis on unpolished musical honesty complements the quartet’s responsive improvisation, making the exchange between vocalist and band central to this collaboration.
