L. Shankar

L. Shankar brings a lifetime of Carnatic mastery and boundary-crossing collaboration to the Freight. Trained in voice, violin and mridangam from childhood, he became a major figure in Indian classical music before helping form Shakti with John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain and T. H. “Vikku” Vinayakram—an ensemble that reshaped the possibilities of global fusion.
In performance, Shankar’s violin joins deep raga knowledge with dazzling technique and an openness to jazz and contemporary forms. Accompanied by Amit Kavthekar on tabla, he moves between lyrical improvisation, rhythmic exchange and the intensity that has marked his work across traditions. The program offers both the rigor of Carnatic music and the exploratory spirit of an artist who has continually expanded its reach.
