The Freight’s daytime Lalo Guerrero Legacy Festival gathers discussions, listening sessions, book talks, panels, and performances devoted to the life and influence of the “Father of Chicano Music.” The program places Guerrero’s wide-ranging musical legacy in conversation with community history, labor, literature, and contemporary cultural work.

Among the featured participants is author and activist Yvonne Martinez, presenting a monologue about Southern California Chicano culture and growing up near Guerrero’s East Los Angeles nightclub. Drawing on her memoir and labor-organizing experience, Martinez connects personal history with broader stories of working people and Mexican American life.
