Marcus Shelby New Orchestra: Thelonious Monk Birthday Celebration
Marcus Shelby and his New Orchestra celebrate Thelonious Monk’s birthday with a large-ensemble program featuring pianist Cyrus Chestnut, tenor saxophonist Sarah Hanahan and vibraphonist Warren Wolf.
Shelby is a bassist, composer, arranger, educator and bandleader whose Bay Area work joins jazz performance with historical and civic themes. His large-scale commissions have explored the history, present and future of the African American experience.
The program draws inspiration from Monk’s orchestral recordings and places Chestnut’s piano at the center. Wolf brings experience performing Monk’s music, while Hanahan, described by SFJAZZ as a major new saxophone voice, joins the ensemble on tenor saxophone.
