In her debut, one-night performance at Black Cat, Bay Area vocalist Natanya Montgomery presents a tribute to Roberta Flack, one of the most influential voices in American soul, jazz, and R&B. Flack came up at a time when soul singing meant power and big vocal display. She went a different, more tender way, resulting in a legendary six decade career that produced countless hits, including “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” and shaped generations of artists after her.
Natanya is a new voice in the Bay Area scene, with a dynamic range that spans genre and a deep, deep love of the ballad. As a singer-songwriter, her interpretation and style is rooted in gospel tradition, honed by years of classical and opera training and deep study of the jazz greats who came before her. This project was born of a love for the b side, amazing songs that never charted and don’t usually make it into a tribute set.
