Only on Earth

Only on Earth captures the rhythms of rural life through the experiences of humans and animals alike in southern Galicia, in the northwest corner of Spain. Rising temperatures and human development have altered the landscape, which for centuries teemed with wild horses that kept the flammable undergrowth in check. Seasons marked by harvest and birthing sheep are now scarred by fire. Director Robin Petré set out to make an immersive, sensorial movie about wild horses and cowboy culture, but the extremity of the fires and, as she put it, “the orange apocalyptic haze,” steered the movie in another direction.
