Orchestra Liberation: A Symphonic Experience Featuring Music of the Black Diaspora

Orchestra Liberation is a fresh, new, Black-led and musician-centered, Oakland-based orchestra bringing the power of the symphonic tradition together with the sounds, rhythms, and creative spirit of the Black Diaspora. Intergenerational and multi-genre, the ensemble reimagines what an orchestra can sound like, look like, and represent, rooted in a simple principle: our music, played by our people, in community with one another.
The repertoire will move fearlessly across generations and genres, featuring original works by Kev Choice, a composition by Cava Menzies, and dynamic orchestral arrangements spanning Stevie Wonder, Bay Area Hyphy, hip-hop classics, R&B staples, and works by African American classical composers. More than a concert, it is designed to be a living, communal experience, with audiences singing, dancing, and vibing along to a rich, soulful sonic palette that moves seamlessly from the symphony hall to the block.
Led by Artistic Director Kev Choice—an Oakland pianist, composer, producer, and MC, classically and jazz-trained yet deeply rooted in hip-hop, soul, and R&B—the orchestra unites strings, winds, brass, percussion, rhythm section, choir, vocalists, MCs, DJs, spoken word, and more for a powerful, interactive, and dynamic musical experience.
The choir is directed by acclaimed Oakland composer and educator Cava Menzies, founder/director of CO-LLAB Choir. This intergenerational collective features Bay Area luminaries including harpist Destiny Muhammad, rising jazz artist Ayo Brame, veteran R&B and hip-hop musicians, and accomplished symphony players—coming together to celebrate Black musical legacy, community, and a bold new vision for the orchestra.
