Ella Fitzgerald, First Lady of Song, evolved through many phases in her almost 60-year career, from commanding the dance floor of the Savoy with a top dance band of the swing era (led by Chick Webb), to touring with Dizzy Gillespie and honing her ear for bebop, to blazing new ground for vocal improvisation, and forging the songbook cycle of recordings. This established her not only as a jazz and swing singer but a pop singer as well and helped to solidify many of the songs composed by the likes of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Gershwin, and so on as great American Standards. In her later years, she toured all over the world performing live and created her beautiful stripped-down recordings with guitarist Joe Pass.
