The Coltrane Influence: Two Different Expressions ft. Wayne Escoffery/Tal Cohen
Black Cat brings together two major voices in modern jazz whose work reflects the influence of John Coltrane while following distinct musical paths.
Grammy Award-winning tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery combines the legacies of Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Henderson with a powerful contemporary sound. A longtime member of Tom Harrell’s quintet and former musical director of the Mingus Big Band, Escoffery leads an acclaimed career that includes his 2024 recording Alone with Gerald Clayton, Ron Carter, and Carl Allen.
Miami-based pianist Tal Cohen draws on folk melody, classical music, and modern jazz harmony. Winner of the Barry Harris National Piano Competition and the Freedman Fellowship, he has performed with Terence Blanchard, Joe Lovano, and Greg Osby. Escoffery and Cohen are joined by bassist Issac Coyle and drummer Malachi Whitson.
