The English Concert: Handel’s Alessandro
Conductor and harpsichordist Harry Bicket leads The English Concert in a concert presentation of Handel’s 1726 opera Alessandro. The lively score focuses on Alexander the Great’s romantic life rather than his military conquests, centering a turbulent triangle between Alessandro and the two women competing for his affection.
Countertenor Christophe Dumaux sings Alessandro, with soprano Joélle Harvey as Lisaura and mezzo-soprano Xenia Puskarz Thomas as Rossane. The cast also includes countertenors Hugh Cutting and Alexander Chance, baritone Ashley Riches, and tenor Anthony Gregory. The English Concert brings its finely paced, dramatically alert approach to an opera full of charm, rivalry, and virtuoso vocal writing.
