The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare
May 11, 2024 - May 26, 2024

“And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?” This phrase is at the heart of the plot in Shakespeare’s play about race, religion and betrayal. The Merchant of Venice takes a satirical look at the rules and standards upheld by the predominant religious society of Venice. Follow Antonio and Bassiano as they request a loan from a local Jewish merchant, Shylock, whom they despise for his lending practices, and who famously demands “a pound of flesh” if the debt is not repaid in time. Under the direction of Giulio Cesare Perrone of the Inferno Theater, Shakespeare’s comedy will have a fresh glaze on this fast-paced commentary on how we see ourselves and others, sacrificing identity for self-preservation.
