Théotime Langlois de Swarte and Thomas Dunford

Baroque violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte and lutenist Thomas Dunford explore the 17th-century English idea of melancholy in The Mad Lover. Using John Eccles’ suite as a point of departure, the duo connects music by three families of composers: Daniel and Henry Purcell, John and Henry Eccles, and Nicola Matteis and his son.

The program moves among sonatas, dances, grounds, and improvisation, including Daniel Purcell’s Sonata in F minor, works from the Matteis violin books, lute music by Joan Ambrosio Dalza, Henry Purcell’s Prelude in G minor, Henry Eccles’ sonatas, and a new division on “John Come and Kiss Me.” The two musicians turn historical style into an expressive conversation that can shift quickly from dreaming tenderness to bruised turmoil.
