A free and UNFORGETTABLE Weekend of Entertainment presented by the Alzheimer’s Association

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing public health crisis, disproportionately impacting communities of color, with the Bay Area reflecting these national disparities. The African American community is disproportionately impacted, with studies showing over 20% of African Americans aged 70 and older are living with the disease, a rate twice as high as non-Hispanic whites.

Black Americans are also likely to receive a diagnosis much later in the disease, when their
medical needs are greater. Data from the California Department of Public Health indicates that African Americans and Hispanics in the Bay Area experience higher rates of Alzheimer’s related hospitalizations and emergency room visits. This underscores the urgent need for tailored outreach and support in these communities.

The Alzheimer’s Association is committed to raising awareness in communities of color. On
Saturday, August 10 at 4 pm, Oakland’s Laney College will be the site of the premiere of
“Unforgettable,” a powerful musical stage play that delves into the profound effects of
Alzheimer’s disease on the African American community. Since July 2022, Unforgettable has toured nationwide, reaching more than 10,000 people.

Carl V. Hill, Ph.D., M.P.H., Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer for the Alzheimer’s Association said, “There is a lack of culturally appropriate and tailored programming that resonates with disproportionately affected and underserved audiences as it relates to Alzheimer’s disease care and support. This community theater gives us the opportunity to deliver important information in a fun and entertaining way. We want audiences to come away with a better understanding of the resources and support that are available to help families who are affected.”

There are several factors that contribute to the increased risk of Alzheimer’s among people of color: 1. Health Disparities: Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease are more prevalent in communities of color 2. Access to Healthcare: Limited access delays diagnosis and treatment and 3. Socioeconomic Factors: Lower socioeconomic status correlates with reduced access to resources.

Public awareness events are essential for spreading knowledge about the disease, its
symptoms, and the importance of early diagnosis.

In conjunction with the weekend’s premier of “Unforgettable”, the “Unforgettable” Community Concert, featuring saxophonist Adrian Crutchfield, who performed and recorded with Prince and the New Power Generation, will take place on Friday, August 9 at 7pm. Both events are free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, so early arrival is recommended.

Event: Cocktails & Creatives with Mayor London Breed
Date: July 12, 2024
Location: San Francisco

On Friday, July 12th, a bevy of Black art collectors, philanthropists and artists hosted over 200 attendees for the Cocktails and Creatives Fundraiser in support of San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s re-election campaign.

Mayor Breed is the first African-American woman Mayor in San Francisco’s history. She grew up in public housing in the Fillmore neighborhood and served as the executive director of the African American Art and Culture Complex in that same community.

Mayor Breed is also known as the “arts Mayor,” reinvesting $60 million annually into San Francisco’s diverse Black communities through the Dream Keepers Initiative, which included investing $18.4M in grants to support for Black artists.

The Mayor additionally invested in increased programming in cultural spaces designed for and by Black folk, increased the number of Black artists and producers, and grew resourcing for Black creatives and organizations, funding organizations such as the African American Art and Culture Complex and the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company (SFBATCO).

Mayor Breed has always shown up for the Black arts community so, it was only fitting that we show up for her.

Leilah Babirye: We Have a History

0

Born in Kampala, Uganda, and based in New York, Leilah Babirye is known for her highly expressive, ambiguously gendered sculptures in ceramic, wood, and discarded objects. Reclaiming ceramic and wood-carving traditions from western and central Africa, she hand builds her ceramics, firing them with expressive glazes, while she whittles, scorches, and burnishes her wood sculptures. As a final touch, she adorns them with wire, bicycle chains, inner tubes, and other found metals and materials. The sculptures, which range in scale from towering totemic forms to busts, talismans, and masks, are portraits of her LGBTQ+ community. Babirye’s work speaks to the power of reclaiming personal and cultural identity through artistic practices, historical narratives, and cultural traditions.
