The son of Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés, the winner of seven GRAMMYs and six Latin GRAMMY Awards joined Armando Romeu’s celebrated Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music in 1967, a time when the communist government still considered American jazz anti-revolutionary. He was already recognized as the most formidable pianist of his generation when he launched Irakere in 1973 with a phenomenal cast that included saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.

Omar Sosa: Quarteto Americanos

Omar Sosa’s third night of residency is devoted to an electro-acoustic ensemble born of the pianist’s time as a Bay Area resident in the 1990s. Featuring an all-star cast including a pair of longtime collaborators, drumming luminary Josh Jones and wind master Sheldon Brown, the quartet is completed by bassist Ernesto Mazar Kindelán and began in early 2021 during the pandemic when Sosa returned to the Bay Area for some online performances. They went on to tour the U.S. in 2024 to celebrate the release of director Soren Sorensen’s documentary film on Sosa, Omar Sosa’s 88 Well-Tuned Drums.

Singer/songwriter Vanessa Collier’s sixth album Do It My Own Way comes out September 13 via Phenix Fire Records. Recorded on analog gear with the musicians largely in one room, Do It My Own Way is sonically inspired by the classic Memphis soul sound of Stax and Hi Records, especially that of the Staples Singers.

Second single “Wild As a Rainstorm,” which dives deep into soul territory, powerfully gives advice to women and people who feel left out to ignore the naysayers and “Be a tapestry of dreams.” The track has been added to Spotify’s official Retro Soul playlist. The groove and horns would make Willie Mitchell proud, and indeed feature legendary Hi Records organist Rev. Charles Hodges. The vocals are powerful, awe-inspiring, and undeniably soulful.
