Meshell Ndegeocello

Meshell Ndegeocello brings a warm, melodic bass groove and a career-long refusal of genre boundaries to the Freight. Across soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop and rock, she has used music to investigate love, justice, desire, respect and the possibilities of Black and queer expression—always choosing originality and longevity over easy categories.
The program reflects the expansive spirit of her recent Blue Note work, including Synonym, a project that reimagines songs from folk, soul, country, pop, alternative rock and hip-hop. Rather than treating covers as fixed objects, Ndegeocello transforms them through arrangement, collaboration and her own conceptual lens. The result is music as fellowship: familiar material opened to new meanings by a restless bandleader, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
