Kazemde George Trio
BAR PickBlack Culture

Brooklyn-based saxophonist Kazemde George is a rising star in modern improvised music, an artist whose innovative compositions and profound musicianship have made him one of today’s most exciting voices.

George builds unique musical landscapes by blending traditions from across the African diaspora, drawing on bebop, rumba, bossa nova, hip-hop and more. Born to Caribbean parents and raised in Berkeley, California, he pairs a Harvard neurobiology background with jazz mastery from the New England Conservatory, and his scientific curiosity about African musical expression guides his artistry. After studying under jazz luminaries including Miguel Zenón, Jason Moran and Jerry Bergonzi, George expanded his work significantly during a ten-month Peabody Gardner Fellowship in Cuba. His acclaimed 2021 debut I Insist and recent release Ocean Passage showcase his distinctive voice in modern jazz. He has shared stages with influential artists including Solange Knowles, David Murray and Jason Moran, performing at venues from Lincoln Center to international festivals like the Panama Jazz Festival and AfroPunk.

His work is a thoughtful convergence of tradition and innovation, connecting the musical threads of the African diaspora while pushing jazz’s boundaries with analytical precision and emotional depth.
