Marcus Shelby New Orchestra: Plays Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite featuring Tiffany Austin
Bassist, composer and arranger Marcus Shelby leads his New Orchestra with guest vocalist Tiffany Austin in Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s jazz interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite.
Shelby’s ensemble brings new life to the celebrated 1960 arrangements and also performs original arrangements of holiday music and Black spirituals, joining enduring melodies with the orchestral language of Ellington and Strayhorn.
Ellington’s recording gave Strayhorn equal billing on its cover, recognizing their creative partnership. Shelby modeled his New Orchestra on Ellington’s ensemble; here, the arrangements connect Tchaikovsky’s melodies with the distinct big-band voices of Ellington and Strayhorn, alongside the evening’s holiday selections and spirituals.
