Black Panther Party 60th Anniversary Community Day

Community Day brings the Black Panther Party’s 60th-anniversary commemoration to Lil Bobby Hutton Park in Oakland on October 18. The gathering is free to all and forms part of the anniversary presented by the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and It’s About Time BPP. The wider commemoration brings together veterans, organizers, educators, artists and community members to consider the party’s history and continuing influence.
Founded in Oakland in 1966, the Black Panther Party developed community programs that included school breakfasts, health clinics, education and support for prisoners and their families. The anniversary places that work alongside the party’s commitments to political education, self-defense and international solidarity. Community Day offers a public point of connection with that legacy at the park also known as DeFremery Park.
