Bartók Concerto for Orchestra and Jean-Yves Thibaudet
Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet performs Khachaturian’s punchy and propulsive Piano Concerto, which the Armenian composer called the “first national concerto for piano” and hoped would inspire other Soviet composers. His musical style was expansive and inclusive, a unique mixture of many folk traditions. Equally eclectic, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra embraces Baroque fugues, Hungarian folk songs, mysterious night music, angular tonal experiments, and birdsong. Opening this program conducted by Rafael Payare is Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, which evokes a magical blue deer, sacred to the Huichol people of Mexico.
