Buttercup
April 3 - April 13

Bay Area writer J.D. Murphy’s Buttercup makes its world premiere at Marin Shakespeare Company from April 3-13, 2025. Inspired by Guy de Maupassant’s Boule de Suif, this satirical drama follows a former nun-turned-courtesan as she embarks on a perilous journey with a caravan of refugees during the Franco-Prussian War. Faced with snobbish bourgeoisie, a mysterious nun, and a young Prussian officer, Buttercup navigates survival, class tensions, and faith, all with a sharp dose of irreverence.
Directed by acclaimed Bay Area theater artist Nancy Carlin (Berkeley Rep, ACT, Cal Shakes), Buttercup features an award-winning ensemble cast, bringing Murphy’s witty and thought-provoking script to life. With its blend of biting satire and heartfelt storytelling, the play examines social hypocrisy and resilience in times of crisis.
