Dom Flemons’ Mexican-American Roots and the Celebration of Lalo Guerrero

Grammy-winning musician Dom Flemons and his wife and creative collaborator Vania Kinard lead a virtual exploration of Mexican and Chicano musical heritage centered on Lalo Guerrero, the “Father of Chicano Music.” Their conversation draws on archival research, collected recordings, and Flemons’ Mexican American ancestry.
The pair traces a family musical legacy reaching back to the late 1800s and considers how songs preserve stories of Mexican and Chicano identity in the American Southwest. The presentation offers a behind-the-scenes view of research as creative practice and introduces themes that continue through The Freight’s Lalo Guerrero Legacy Festival.
