Dom Flemons’ Mexican-American Roots and the Celebration of Lalo Guerrero
Dom Flemons explores Mexican and Chicano musical heritage through the life and legacy of Lalo Guerrero, the artist widely celebrated as the Father of Chicano Music. Drawing on archival research and the history of his own Black Mexican family in the American Southwest, Flemons considers how borderlands traditions have shaped the broader American songbook.
Joined by cultural researcher Vania Kinard, Flemons connects songs, stories and historical context to reveal the intertwined roots of Mexican American, African American and folk music. The program serves as a lead-in to the Lalo Guerrero Legacy Festival while offering a wider view of migration, identity and cultural memory—showing how music carries family histories forward and creates new possibilities from them.
