J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion
Conductor Masaaki Suzuki leads the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion during the work’s 300th-anniversary year. Scored for double choir, double orchestra, and vocal soloists, Bach’s monumental setting of chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew combines biblical narrative with chorales and reflective arias.
Tenor Nick Pritchard sings the Evangelist and bass Florian Störtz portrays Jesus. The solo team also includes sopranos Carolyn Sampson and Jone Martínez, altos Alexander Chance and Matthias Dähling, tenor Hugo Hymas, and bass Timothy Edlin. Together, the performers illuminate the oratorio’s intense human drama, moral conflict, and spiritual scale.
