Joseph Tawadros: The Art of the Oud
The Art of the Oud offers an intimate solo evening with Cairo-born virtuoso Joseph Tawadros. Playing the fretless, pear-shaped lute central to Middle Eastern music, he draws on the Arabic modal system of maqam while opening his original compositions to Baroque, jazz and folk influences.
The program moves from fast, technically dazzling passages to lyrical, inward pieces that reveal the oud’s extraordinary range of color. As an ancestor of Baroque lutes and the modern guitar, the instrument carries a long musical history, but Tawadros approaches it as a contemporary composer as well as a master performer. Presented in Philharmonia’s SESSIONS series, the setting is designed for close listening and direct connection with the artist.
