Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum brings his Memphis gospel-rooted blend of jazz, R&B and soul to Yoshi’s Oakland. Discovered by pianist Bob James, Whalum became an in-demand session player whose credits include Luther Vandross, Quincy Jones and Whitney Houston; his saxophone is featured on Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”

The 12-time Grammy nominee won Best Gospel Song for “It’s What I Do,” featuring Lalah Hathaway, and has released more than 30 solo projects, including the chart-topping Gospel According to Jazz series and Epic Cool!

Performances: Friday, September 4 at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, September 5 at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.
