Querelle
Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) transforms a French seaport into an expressionistic world of fiery color, theatrical sets and charged desire. A sailor and unrepentant criminal comes ashore, drawing the town’s inhabitants into passion, rivalry and violence as Fassbinder pushes his depiction of gay desire toward surreal, darkly humorous extremes.
Co-presented by artist GaHee Park, filmmaker Michael Vass and YBCA, the screening is part of Through an Open Window, a film series reflecting themes in Park’s exhibition Behind the Curtain. The program connects Fassbinder’s bold visual and political language with Park’s interests in layered narratives, fantasy, voyeurism and performance, and includes themed snacks and gallery admission.
