Gustavo Gimeno leads the Symphony in a spectacular Slavic program, full of passion and pyrotechnics. Unfurling from a simple melody sung by the piano, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 grows in complexity and scope culminating in a torrent of bravura. Pianist Yefim Bronfman serves as the ideal translator, conveying all the composer’s nuances and idioms. Borodin’s melting-pot score to Prince Igor boasts not only authentic Caucasian tunes but also melodies inspired by North Africa and the Middle East. Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony was composed at the height of the Second World War but its appeal is universal. As conductor Serge Koussevitzky effused: “It is magnificent! It is yesterday, it is today, it is tomorrow.”
